2011-12-23 03:12:00 | My apologies ... the measurements were not available when I first posted. I live in Dunedin and couldn't get through on the phone to find out whether friends and family were all OK ... thankfully they are, but even they can't tell me what, if, or how much damage has been sustained to ChCh as a result of it. All good. Surprisingly, at least according to the news, there isn't much damage or many injuries. Not sure if it felt stronger that it was, or I'm getting soft, but it just seemed a lot more violent than it probably was. Maybe because we haven't had one for a while now and everyone is getting ready for Xmas. Decent wee aftershock just then too.

2011-12-23 03:38:00 | My brother flew out of Chch this morning to come up here to Whangarei for Xmas so he was lucky. Has heard from all his mates and they are all good.

2011-12-23 04:30:00 | Hmmmmmm.... A swarm of quakes - including a magnitude 6 and three at or above magnitude 5 - have hit Christchurch, toppling damaged buildings, injuring residents and disrupting power, phone services and retailers.

2011-12-23 04:53:00 | I was in ChCh Airport - upstairs in the new terminal waiting for my daughter and her family, when the first one hit. Interesting crowd behaviour - almost as one, people turned and made their way to the exits in a calm and orderly manner. A few people in tears, but no screaming or running or anything. A couple of minutes later, by which time the crowd was smoothly flowing out, the fire alarms went off, and a PA announcement "please evacuate the terminal" started up. We beat them to it! It wasn't too bad getting out of the building, but outside the doors they have made gardens and terraces with metal fencing, that act like a barrier to people trying to get away from the acres of glass overhead. It was obviously designed by a landscape architect who had no idea about evacuation procedures. I heard a number of people commenting about the bottleneck that has been created - you kind of get shepherded into a cattle race sort of arrangement, and this slows people down. And of course the control tower, which is like a gigantic ice cream cone, is towering over the only route out of that part of the terminal. I was outside when the second one hit, and I could see the big windows in the car parking tower block flexing in and out like a set of bellows. I couldn't believe that glass could flex like that without shattering. The boys in blue were obviously worried too, and tried to get the crowd away from the large plates of glass that form the wall of the walkway to the carpark. Only problem was that this was the only shade from the sun, and baldies like me wanted to stay under there...

Hope everyone else is all good, few reports of buildings falling and a few injured ppl. 19 I last heard. No deaths though that I know of so theres one good thing | hueybot3000 (3646) | ||
2011-12-23 05:17:00 | I think the timing is terrible. People in Chch will have been looking keenly forward to a break, to rest, do nothing, and forget the tough year they've had. Now they face another year potentially just like the last, an Xmas spent with a shovel and barrow, and a portaloo going very ripe in the summer sun. Those who care for the infrastructure will once again miss much of xmas with the family. Huge credits to the workers who will be toiling long, long hours to get suburbs alive again.

2011-12-23 05:20:00 | I think for the most part everything will be back to normal by end of tomorrow. Some areas have taken a hit but overall it's nothing compared to past events. Pretty much everyone has power. Everyone has water AFAIK and liquifaction is not near as bad. Just a minor setback I think. Haven't seen any news yet only spoken to people. | hueybot3000 (3646) | |

2011-12-23 06:17:00 | Someone asked about the shake strengths. 5.3 I think off Lyttelton Heads, 6.0 centered under Marine Parade, 5.8 off shore of New Brighton/Pegagus. Many mid 3s to mid 4s mixed in as well. Iam getting the geonet emails fairly quickly here in WA. I called home earlier, our house has further structural damage and further contents damage but no mud and hasn't lost water or phone yet. Still waiting for ECQ to access us after damage from Sept and Feb, never ending. At least early reports suggest no deaths this time and no large scale injuries.
