1250966 2011-12-27 23:42:00 It's not religion that's the problem - it's the people and their intolerance towards other people's religion.

I heard the story of a five year old protestant girl in Northern Ireland whose walk to school took her through a catholic area. She, too, was hassled. The stupid thing about it was that her parents fought for her right to walk through a catholic area rather than walk a different way to school. Why would you want to put your child through that?

Parents in Northern Ireland teach their children that not only must they have nothing to do with anyone from the opposite religion but should despise and hate them. It's crazy. But they have been fighting each other for hundreds of years and so it is inbred.

So don't ban religion. That won't work. They'll just find something else to fight about. Better to teach your children how to love and respect everyone - not just those who are different - with the hope that it will lead to a better world.

Ban religion. It's bad for your common sense anyway.

Ban fighting? Hah, there's an idea, humans are too violent though, we'd have to breed it out of ourselves.

Religion not the problem? Sounds like religion is indeed the problem. If they weren't religious they probably wouldn't be getting taught to hate the other guys.

1250970 2011-12-28 00:37:00 It's not just religion, political ideology, ethnicity, land ownership, even brand loyalty or the colour of your clothes engender intolerance and abuse and violence.

The only sensible solution is to kill eveyone in the whole world, muahahahahaha .....

If children are taught to hate - and they have to be taught to hate, it's not something that they do naturally - then the reason can be anything, it does not need to be religion. Fred fish has got it right:

So if they weren't fighting over religion they would find something else to fight about. Unfortunately it seems to be human nature.

The same thing happened in America in the prohibition era. It simply went underground. I'm sure the same would happen if you tried to ban anything. It just does not work.

But before you start talking about banning religion, you need to experience the intolerance for yourself. Once you have been in the middle of it as I have been, you will realise that religion was only an excuse for hating and fighting. If there was no such thing as religion they would find some other difference to fight over.

I was living in Belfast in the height of the "troubles" in the early 70s. It was very obvious that the mostly young people were fighting, not because they had religious leanings, not because the other side was of a different religious persuasion, but because they were bored. Unemployment was very high in those day and the city's youth had nothing to do so they would spend their time making bombs and fighting. They roamed the streets in small groups looking for trouble. Much of the rioting and fighting was prearranged. The two sides' leaders would arrange a date and time and so off they would go. It really did not have too much to do with religion. It was simply an exciting way of passing the time. And the ironic thing about it was that the British Government - the government that many of these unemployed were purportedly fighting against - was paying them the unemployment benefit.

You really do have to look at the reason as to why people are fighting. In many cases, such as the rioting and fighting in Belfast, religion was only an excuse. The two sides - protestant and catholic - were just a convenient reason to fight. If it were not religion they would fight over any convenient excuse. It was simply because they were bored.

Roscoe has got it right. Instead of teaching the children to hate, teach them to love and respect the other person no matter what the difference.

Who is going to do the teaching ?.

Noticed the young girl had "light blue eyes" as if that had anything to with it.

The pope prays for peace, yet again, as if he had the sway power, he is not a Hitler, although he came up in that era.

Those ultras' remind me of the pharisees and sadducees in Jesus's time, letter of the law or else.

Lurking.
