12178 2001-05-05 01:45:00 Hi,Pc world and readers
I am having problems with a new hard drive installation.
I have upgraded my HDD from a 4.2 G to a 30G HDD. Ialso incresed my RAM to 128mb. The new drive is a seagate barracuda III 7200rpm. I run a 333Mhz pentium and win 98. Atthe moment my HDD is the prim master and cdrom sec master with cdrw as sec slave. This all worked fine until i changed HDD. now I consistently get underuns from source drive at varying write speeds. I am using adeptec EZCD creator +. I have checked the trouble shooter on adeptec and discover that the HDD is not 'disconect' enabled as per inst for both in troubleshooter, but I cannot see how to change this. The check box is greyed out in the control panel/system/device mangr settings. Is this the problem and how do I correct it. If not what is?
I would appreciate a hand. cheers. Geoff.G

12179 2001-05-05 12:19:00 Hi Geoff
It is not advisable to have both your Cd Rom's on the same controller.
A preferable set up for you would be >>
CD Rom >> primary Slave.
CD Writer >>Secondary Master.

Having both on the same controller often leads to buffer underruns.

12181 2001-05-08 14:59:00 I agree with the response about making the HDD primary master and CD-Writer Secondary master, but disagree about making the CD-ROM the primary slave. As I understand it, if 2 devices are running on the same IDE cable, the data transfer rate will drop to the speed of the slowest device. Therefore your ATA-100 capable drive will only run at ATA-33 (the speed of the CD-ROM.

While your were in the device manager did you check to see if the HDD DMA setting was enabled? It might also pay to check if the HDD has been correctly identified and configured in BOIS, and that S.M.A.R.T. Drive is enabled.

Another thing that will speed up the HDD response times is partitioning it in to several smaller drives (suggest somewhere between 6 and 10Gb each).

12182 2001-05-10 12:23:00 Hi, I have configured my CDRW as sec master and CDR as sec slave but this has not improved writng much. I notice my HDD is auto configured but does not have DMA box ticked in device manager. How do I do this. I have checked the box and restarted my computer but this does not alter setting. It defaults to unchecked. How can I change this and will it help. I am running a PII 333 with win98 orig. This problem started with the new HDD. A 30G seagate barracuda III 7200rpm. By the way I have partitioned the drive to one 20G and one 10G partition. Guest (0)
