12346 2001-05-08 10:57:00 After reading about firewalls in May internet mag. I found and installed 'ZoneAlarm'. I now have a program in my computer, 'Microsoft Works Update Detection' wanting access to the internet. What is this program? Should I let it have access? Guest (0)
12347 2001-05-08 13:01:00 ...presumably you have a recent edition of the programme 'Microsoft Works' on your system. Yes?

The programme will have a component that 'rings home' to a Microsoft site for updates to the software when you go on-line. Obviously you have configured Zone Alarm correctly and it is simply warning you of this event.

Of itself, this function in 'Works' is harmless - although somewhat of a resource and bandwidth hog and it might interfere with your other on-line work until the action is completed.

Whether you leave the function enabled or not is a personal choice.

You may disable the function from within the 'Works' programme without causing any harm. Alternatively, you may leave the function enabled and set your Zone Alarm firewall to refuse it Internet access as follows:

right-click Z/A in the system tray > left click 'Z/A Control Centre' > right click the 'Works' Utility in the Programmes interface > then, under Internet, left-click your choice (either 'ask' or 'disallow'). You may return and change this setting at any time.
