12535 2001-05-13 06:36:00 I am in the market for a new pc. I am after sheer performance. So I guess the first question is 1.33 GHz the highest processor that AMD currently has? And performance wise who is the better of the two, and would a 1.7 Ghz P4 with rd-ram blow a 1.33 AMD Athalon with DDR-ram out of the water. Or whatever the best config is for the two cpus. Guest (0)

12537 2001-05-13 23:57:00 there are heaps of benchmarks/comparasons on the net of intel vers amd.
basicly amd kicks intels butt in most apps but not all. some games run extremly well on a p4. it all comes done to what software you plan on useing and price of parts.
i would pick amd, currently faster in most apps and a whole lot cheaper.

12538 2001-05-14 05:03:00 Hello Carl

Unless you are going into Video editing, stick with the Athlon.
The only unaminous benchmark test that the P4 beats the Athlon in is Video and to a lesser extent Audio compression/decompression, some games are now appearing optimised for the P4, so you would expect these to also perform favourably, other than that the Athlon on all fronts, another point worth considering you could fit 512MB PC133MHz SDRam for about the same price as 128MB of Rambus or 256MB of DDR, systems I have seen benchmarked against the lesser amounts of RD & DDR also perform very well with the benefit of running known reliable Ram, there is still some doubts and teething problems with the other types.

12540 2001-05-15 09:26:00 Do you think that in the future that one or other would gain a serious edge over the other? I have read somewhere that by the time the P4 has hit 2Ghz the athlon will have only reached 1.5. Guest (0)
