| 12511 | 2001-05-12 20:30:00 | Scandisk insists on running whenever I boot - even from a clean shutdown and start - including a time consuming surface scan. I have searched for a way of preventing this, but have been unable to do so. The scandisk utility offers no options. It's no big deal and I can avoid by using 'exit', but it lengthens the boot process considerably. I have recently used DriveSpace to compress my HD and wonder if perhaps scandisk is integral to this. Can anyone please advise? |

First is the Start up folder in the programs menu. If a shortcut to scandisk exists, delete it. The second thing to check is msconfig (select run from the start menu and type msconfig.exe in the dialog box), uncheck the options to run scandisk at startup. A third possibility is scandisk has been scheduled to run by another program, disable any schedule programs. If scandisk runs before the Windows GUI has loaded you will need to open c:\msdos.sys using a text editor such as notepad. It may be hidden so make sure to show all files first. After opening the file, scroll down until you find the [Options] section. There should be an entry, AutoScan=Number, the default is 1, this defines whether or not ScanDisk is run after a bad shutdown. A setting of 0 does not run ScanDisk, 1 prompts before running ScanDisk and 2 does not prompt before running ScanDisk but prompts you before fixing errors if any errors are found. The entry should read, AutoScan=1. Save the file and restart the computer |
