We had trouble booting up our computer this morn. After finally getting on with safemode, we found that all our files, folders and documents in our START menu had disappeared and a number of things including the outlook express icon on our desktop had also gone. Surprisingly in our 'My documents' folder we found some recent word documents. For some reason the my documents folder was untouched! Not sure what happened. Did a search for missing documents, found nothing. Does anyone know if there'll be any chance of me finding all those documents that have mysteriously disappeared into cyber space? ran nortons antivirus and foudn no sign of a virus. |

Ok, when you boot your computer in safe mode, windows loads the absolute bare minimum to make it easier to diagnose problems.
My first guess is that if you boot the computer normally, you will find that everything is back to normal. If that however doesnt seem to fix anything, my next guess would be that you have somehow changed the username you are logging on to windows with... and as each user has a customisable desktop, this too would remove a lot of your shortcuts. Try logging on with the same username you did before you were having problems |

Thanks Iain, we thought of that as well with the logging on. However when we boot up we never log on as any user anyway. The people at the HP help desk also thought of this as well. It does look like that .. but as I said we are only one user .. any other ideas? |
