12638 2001-05-15 12:36:00 Just a few questions about your problem:

a. Does The computer run ok if you bypass your password (by pressing ESC)?

b. Are the motherboard jumpers set up correctly?

c. Are the BIOS settings correct for the new motherboard?

d. Did you install the new motherboard drivers? (also audio and video drivers, if applicable).

e. Have all the system devices been correctly installed by windows? (Check the Device Manager in System on the Control Panel).

12639 2001-05-15 21:16:00 heres the information you wante d.
a. no, if i bypass the password i still have problems

b. as far as i know and by refering to the manual all the motherboard jumpers are set correctly at the moment.

c. all the BIOS setting are on the defult settings.

d. yes i installed the new motherboard drivers and audio and video drivers.

e. all devices have been installed by windows and all are working corectly with no colflicts, BUT, if i try to remove any devices (through device manager) it freaks and the removal window fails to respond so i have to end the programe by ctrl alt delet e. ( im not quite sure if that is when it boots up wrong or right, but at the moment it seems to be booting up wrong more often.)

hope this helps.

12640 2001-05-15 23:29:00 Hey there,if it's alright sometimes when you boot it up from cold, and then locks up once you have it going then it could be a cooling problem.
Check to see if your cpu fan is working,or put your finger on the heatsink to test if it is really hot.If it is too hot to hold your finger on it,then you may have set the voltage wrong. Also it could be the power management, disable it in the setup and see how it goes.I recently put a p3 600e in my computer and had similar problems and found out it was the power management system.

12641 2001-05-16 13:55:00 You may have a power management problem. If you have ACPI power management enabled in the BIOS, try disabling it and see if things improve.

Another common power management problem is caused by the BIOS power settings conflicting with the Windows settings. If this is the case set the Windows options to never turn anything off and let the BIOS manage it. Though these sort of conflicts generally only cause problems with putting the computer into standby or waking it up again.

If a removing a device causes the computer to hang it generally means it is in use at the time.

Removing unused(old) devices from the device Manager while in Safe Mode can't hurt, but sometimes if you don't remove the associated inf files then Windows may reinstall them again (This is more likely to happen if Windows is misidentifying a device and loading the drivers for another device). Be very cautious about what you delete from the System Devices part of Device Manager. Some options cannot be removed without problems occuring.

It is possible that a critial file in Windows has been damaged. As these are very difficult to find you may be better to reinstall Windows to get around this problem. Note: If you go to the microsoft.com (Knowledge Base) there is procedure on how to reinstall Windows in such a way that the original version can be restored if needed. I can't remember the question number at the momment, but will let you know.

12642 2001-05-21 21:20:00 thanks for your input. the more i look into this problem it seems to be a bios/windows problem rather than the processor. I have tried the power settings but it didn't solve the problem, so reinstalling windows might be my only option or to go back to the old motherboard. thanks again. Guest (0)
