12824 2001-05-19 00:51:00 Our modem usually connects to XTRA and i4free at about 33.6kbps (33,600bps). However, under modem properties in control panel, in the diagnostics tab when I click 'More Info' it reports maximum speed as being 115K baud. Why isn't it connecting at at least 56K?

PS: I've got a 486DX/200, 48MB of RAM and a 1.96GB hard drive.

12825 2001-05-19 02:15:00 ...if you're getting a 6 kilobyte download through a 56K modem, you are doing very well indeed.

The reason for the discrepancy here is that in each of these cases, the K stands for something different. Your modem is 56Kilobits. There are 8 bits in a byte, and 1024 bytes in a kilobyte. What this means is that your modem's maximum download speed (if all conditions are perfect) is 56,000 bits, or 7,000 bytes, or 7 kilobytes. Given the nature of 56K modems (see the article above) a 7K download is technically impossible.

Make sense? Nah - me neither.

The following article explains it all quite well:

12826 2001-05-19 14:46:00 Providing the modem and your Dial-up Networking are configured correctly, the problem is most likely due to either your local exchange or the wiring between it and your computer.

Things at home which can effect your connection rate are:
a. Damaged cables,
b. Too many phones etc connected to the same line you modem plugs into.
c. Too many connections between your telephone jack and the modem.
d. Too long/many extension cords, or you are connected to an phone extension some distance from where the phone lines enter your house.
d. Your phone has call waiting.
e. There are electric fences or high current switching devices nearby (eg. coolrooms, arc welders), though these usually cause the modem to drop off line.

If all is ok in the house, contact Telecom and get them to do a noise check on your phone line.
Noisy lines can be fixed, but if the fault is due to the exchange using older (noisier) equipment, there is nothing you can do.
