12777 2001-05-18 14:40:00 ...Hello again, JJ.

I have been following your ongoing saga regarding a (possible) Trojan Horse with interest - and not without some concern for your predicament.

For what it is worth, I will: [A] make three observations, and [B] provide ten suggestions as to the ongoing management of the situation.

[A]

(i) It is all too easy for one to become obsessed with the security of one's own system and overload it with gadgets and gizmos that will seek and destroy possible (or perceived) nasties. In the same vein, one can spend an inordinate amount of time doing scans and searching the system for possible intruders. Likewise, it is possible to overdo one's Gateway security with excessive layers of firewalls, virus checkers, script defenders and surfing guards (to mention just a few of the utilities available).

(ii) Many of these Utilities, in and of themselves, are 'trojan horses' by definition - hence the warnings received about your Black Ice Firewall. Remember also that *any* programme installed on your system is a 'virus' (per se) and can cause the Security Utility/s to launch 'warnings' or cause your system to display 'strange behaviour/s'.

(iii) If the 'Cleaners' and 'Scans' used to date indicate that your system is clean - then the chances are that, indeed, the system is clean and the 'behaviours' which cause you concern can be resolved with good housekeeping practices. To that end I make the following suggestions:

[B]

(i) Install a Virus checking programme and update the patches on a regular, or weekly basis. Some users also 'scan' their system on a daily basis too.

(ii) Install a firewall that *both* defends against intruders coming into your system - AND warns about any intruder on your system trying to call out [ZoneAlarm is a utility that will do both].

(iii) On a daily basis do a 'logical' scan of your hard drive and repair any errors.

(iv) Depending on the amount of work your system does, defrag your system on a regular (maybe a weekly or sometimes a daily) basis.

(v) Empty your Temporary Internet Files on a regular basis (some users do this daily)

(vi) Delete junk files on a regular basis. [To ensure efficiency, I use Fred Langa's tools for this: www.langa.com

(vii) Learn how the different Security Zones in Internet Explorer work - and apply this knowledge. [a useful article is at this address: www.microsoft.com

(viii) As required, download and install all security patches and upgrades for your Operating System and Utilities.

(ix) Keep your Registry clean. I use both the (a) Microsoft and (b) Jouni Vuorio's Registry Cleaners for this. These are *free* downloads from the following sites:

(a) www.microsoft.com [the following article is worth reading too: support.microsoft.com ]

(b) http://www.jv16.org/

(x) Have fun !!!
