12766 2001-05-17 15:58:00 If you suspect a Windows file has been corrupted, but are unable to prove it with other troubleshooting tools, try installing a clean version of Windows in such a way that your current version can be restored if required.

Refer Q142096 (How to Reinstall Windows 95 to a New Folder) in the Knowledge Base at http://www.microsoft.com/

The procedure involves: Backing-up/renaming system files and folders while in DOS, rebooting the computer using the Windows Boot disk and installing Windows from the CD.

CAUTION: Ensure that Windows is installed to the c:\windows directory. Do not let it overwrite the old (renamed) Windows directory.

To revert to the previous configuration, the copied/renamed files and folders are simply restored to their original names (after renaming/deleting their new equivalents). It's very simple and does work.

Thanks!

In a similar vein - here's another one from the Lockergnomes for repairing 'critical files' in Windows98 and which I'll quote in its entirity:

'...Coming from the 'Sweating Bullets' department, Lockergnomie Nathan Riley is dropping to DOS. For the most part, your system should be stable. I mean, if it was always in shambles, you would have reinstalled Windows by now. Don't have time? Don't wanna lose any of your settings or software? Supposedly, there's a command line option that'll get you back on your feet in no time. 'Boot up your PC with a Windows 98 boot disk, pop in your Windows 98 CD, and once you're at the command prompt, type your CD-ROM drive letter immediately followed by a colon. So, if your CD was set to 'D' -- you'd enter D: and then hit ENTER. At this point, you'll type the following command: SETUP /pf (exactly as shown). This switch will restore all of Windows' critical files to their 'factory state,' and in 99% of situations (according to this Gnomie), doing this will fix whatever problems you were having in Windows 98 ...'

Note ~ I have not tried this myself (yet!)
