13044 2001-05-22 04:24:00 I am running Win98SE on a fairly high spec HP Pavilion 440BX PIII 128Mb with the onboard graphics card disabled and running a Matrox Millenium graphics card.

I have one consistent problem with it - used to be intermittent (say 75% of the time) but is now 100% of the time.

Whever I shutdown and use the Restart option - OR if software initiates this sequence (eg. after a s/w install or upgrade) - the PC seems to shutdown normally.
It then begins the reboot but soon after the 'Win98' splash screen comes up, it stops and reboots again.

Because of the failed boot, it then enters the boot menu and unless I am near the PC at the time to change the option, it then enters Safe Mode as a result.

Any ideas?! I've tried everything I can think of.

13045 2001-05-23 06:07:00 Have you loaded the shutdown patches?
If you haven't go to the Win98 Update site and get the Shutdown patch plus the Shutdown for networked drives.

13046 2001-05-23 10:27:00 ...and these two articles on the Microsoft Knowledge Base which relate to Windows Shut Down problems might be helpful:

13047 2001-05-24 08:13:00 Thanks for both ideas. Nothing I've found on the Microsoft site has helped so far. Guest (0)
13048 2001-05-24 09:01:00 I've isolated the problem and found a workaround. If I disable the PCI Modem Enumerator, it restarts fine. Of course I can't use the modem with this disabled, but that's not too much of a problem as I'm on ADSL.

Now ... any ideas how I can fix this properly?! (The drivers are the latest.)
