13303 2001-05-28 04:07:00 I have an old monitor, and on my old 486 (which it came with) it used to be capable of 800x600 resolution at 256 color. The refresh rate was very low at 800x600 but it worked.
I have now ditched my old 486 and am using a p166 attached to the same screen. The video card is far newer in the p166, but the result is less.
Any attempt to display anything above 16 colours at 640x480 results in lines of random color about 1 pixel wide scattered across the display, and a high pitched whine coming from the back of the screen. Needless to say - this is no help to me at all.

My old video card is not compatable with the p166 as it used the now extinct VESA interface.

Any ideas how to get my monitor to handle at least 256 colors - i am not too worried about the resolution, but many of my windows programs refuse to start under 16 color.

Thanks,
Craig.

13304 2001-05-28 11:09:00 The monitor is probably not the problem. You need to find the correct drivers for your video card and install them. Guest (0)
13305 2001-05-28 20:59:00 Yep, tried that. I had the latest drivers installed already - Video card works fine with a year old phillips monitor ive got, up to resolutions of 1280x960, so i figure an incompatability between old monitor and new card.

Any ideas how to fix, or do i need to toss the old screen and start again?

13306 2001-05-30 04:39:00 try booting into safe mode and change the refresh rate to the lowest option available
and 256 colors

13307 2001-06-02 13:24:00 Hi.
Youv probably tried this but check the monitor driver. Experiement with 'standard monitor types' which are the windows drivers which are actually very good. also under standard monitor types the default monitor setting may do the job.
hope this helps...id say your monitor is fine as long as the pins matchup in the plg...and its going so it seems fine.

13308 2001-06-06 00:25:00 No joy with that either, the refresh rate cannot be changed - only choice is optimal. When i reboot out of safe mode, the screen dies as soon as windows initialises it to anything above 16 color. Guest (0)
