Amer/megatrends (062710 is this the bios #)I think the bios date is 15/7/97. could this be the problem. I am running win98se. It locks up in Word, and netmeeting after its been running for 3/4 hr so Guest (0)
13244 2001-05-28 03:35:00 ...one suggestion would be to consider whether or not you have an overheating problem - especially in view of the fact that the system crash occurs *after* a certain period of time.

13246 2001-05-28 05:43:00 Re. overheating if my pc was overheating would I notice any increase in temperture in the region of my pc.,because there is'nt any it runs very cool (plenty of cool air coming out of the back. By the way my bios is 28/12/00 so I think it is fairly upto date. If I was running several progs. at the same time eg.netmeeting, outlook express, + in background blackice, inoculate virus scanner while on the net would they cause a lockup?? Guest (0)
13247 2001-05-28 11:01:00 ...hello again Francis,

random system 'lock-ups' or crashes are most frustrating and often difficult to diagnose. However, because we are only dealing with a machine, a methodical trouble shooting approach will eventually isolate the problem/s.

In your case the BIOS (and 'overheating' - which is often overlooked) can, most likely, be disregarded as a factor(s).

Although somewhat difficult to outline in a forum such as this here are some places to start:

(i) First - and importantly - is the Browser *cleanly* installed and correctly configured

(ii) Has a line-noise check been done

(iii) Is there a software conflict [one at a time, disable programmes in the System Tray to see if problem is resolved]

(iv) Are there any BHOs (browser helper objects) running

(v) Is the Desktop set up to 'view as a Web Page' and are there any Active Desk Top items enabled for automatic updates [right click on screen > properties > open Web Tab > check box]

(vi) Do any installed programms have their 'automatic update' functions enabled

(vii) Is the modem correctly configured

(viii) Are there any IRQ conflicts [type 'MSINFO32' without the quotes in 'Run' off the start button, press enter > click + on Hardware Resources in left panel > click IRQ]

(ix) Is the Registry tidy

(x) Do any installed programmes (aka SpyWare) 'ring home'

Good luck

13248 2001-05-29 03:22:00 ...okay then (responding to your posting of 11:25:12, today's date):

(a) From my 'limited' understanding of such things - your IRQs are not the problem in this case.

(b) I would tend to focus on your use of multiple Virus Scanners - this will often cause a conflict and effect (seemingly) random system crashes.

You will probably find advice in the 'Help' or 'read me.txt' of each programme that they should *not* be used in conjunction with other virus checkers.

(c) To eliminate the possibility of either (or both) Virus Scanners conflicting with your 'Black Ice' Firewall is a matter of elimination by methodical trial 'n error.

Best wishes,

e_

P.S. They don't teach you this stuff at night school anyway and, let's face it, many 'help' desks don't deserve the name. Cheers!
