13145 2001-05-25 08:50:00 Have a PIII W98 SE PC. Two years old. A few days ago two things happened at the same time. On Start Up I was presented with a start up menu, 5 options from 1 (Normal) to 5 (Safe Mode command prompt only). Never happened before. I select 1 and it boots OK if slower than usual. Also, the display settings are set to 16 bit colour at 640 x 480. I change the settings and reboot and it comes up back at 16 bit and 640 x489. Most strange. I also have another problem. A scanner on a USB port has stopped altogether (the system does not respond when I push the button on the front). I have tried may things to no avail.

Can anyone help please.

The appearance of the boot menu is not uncommon. This usually appears if the computer has not successfully shutdown or booted up previously. You can also get to this menu by pressing F8 when the message 'Starting Windows 95/98...' appears on the screen. The safe mode option allows you to do a basic startup and can be used for diagnostics. Safe mode will default to 640 x 480 with 16 colours.

To check if there is a problem with your USB port, right click on My computer, select properties, go to device manager and look for a yellow exclamation mark. This may indicate if you have a conflict with your port.

13147 2001-05-26 05:23:00 Thanks Tristan. The system was booting up and shutting down 'funny' as well. Suspect a shut down went wrong for some reason (kids turning off ?). Have fixed all the problems by removing and uninstalling scanner, uninstalling Windows 98 (took some courage) and reloading reinstalling everything. Maybe I should have recalled the discussion on System File Checker on page 100 of April 2001 NZ PC World. Guest (0)
