13376 2001-05-30 03:47:00 Having an old computer with very little memory. I need one or the other. Which is recommended? It appears that my settings are being changed from time to time by outsiders. Does a firewall stop viruses? Guest (0)
13377 2001-05-30 07:44:00 Firewalls are designed to prevent unauthorised access to you computer and stop personal imformation being leaked while on line. Anti Virus programs are purely designed to prevent viruses entering your computer and remove/neutralise any which have managed to do so.

A good anti virus program would be of more benefit. It would prevent your system being damaged by viruses received through e-mail, off floppy disks etc; but it will not prevent your system being damaged by a hacker. Only a firewall has this ability. However, the probability of being attacked by a hacker is far less than that of picking up a virus.
