2012-05-10 23:38:00 | Some advocate having a UPS for the modem router and for at least one phone. Is the telephone exchange also protected and what about that box thing that they need to install for you as well at your premise. | Nomad (952) | |
2012-05-10 23:41:00 | "box thing"? Very generic term there... I have my router, my modem, my switch, my ATA Adapter and my Cordless phone all on a single $100 UPS. Works a treat!! Saved my ass a couple of times! Yes, the exchange is also on a generator, and all of the cabinets have a UPS in them as well as the ability to be hooked up easily to a generator for extended outages.

2012-05-11 00:02:00 | Yeah pretty much what chill said except to be picky the cabinets don't have a UPS, they just have batteries. All Telecom equipment runs on 50volts DC so there is no need for a UPS, Exchanges and cabinets both convert mains to 50volts and charge a battery bank with it. The larger and more critical sites have a generator as well which kicks in automatically during a power outage, but they still have battteries even then. If by "box thing" you mean the white ETP on the outside of your house, it contains no equipment just wires and a passive filter so there's no need for power. As for whether you need one, it depends on your situation. How critical is phone or internet service to you? does the power go off very often in your area? Would it really matter if you had a few hours without it on occasion? I had a UPS for years, never really did much for me and when the batteries died one day the thing had a fit and took out my 8 port switch as well. I live in Hamilton, been in the same house since 1999, and can count the power cuts I've had in that time on one hand. I don't have either a UPS or a surge protector on any of my computer equipment and have never had a problem. I think surge protectors are a big joke anyway, they protect you only from a very specific and unlikely type of power fault and do nothing for power cuts or drops in voltage. UPSs are great for people with unreliable power or critical need for some devices to keep working in a power cut, the rest of us can probably live without them.

2012-05-11 00:05:00 | One other note, if you have a corded phone on a normal jackpoint fed from telecom it gets it's power from the exchange and will work when the power is off, only VOIP or cordless phones need local power. | dugimodo (138) | |
2012-05-11 00:33:00 | Yeah it worked for me twice in the space of 12 months, I personally wouldn't be without one :D | Chilling_Silence (9) | |
2012-05-11 00:48:00 | I have one with my modem/router and my server attached to it. Was about $99 if I remember. Mostly because the server runs a couple of virtual machines and so I want it to power down nicely. Also handy to still have internet in a power cut (twitter for "anyone else lost power? or just me" type questions).

2012-05-11 01:09:00 | "box thing"? Yes, box thing. Goes with the thingamajig, whatisit, doofer and so on. The gadget you know. We should all have learnt these terms now as techies.

2012-05-11 01:39:00 | Mmm... I like my standard line-powered phone. No UPS, no batteries, no power failure. If the exchange loses power for long enough that the power supply from there fails, I think we'd be in a bit more trouble than to worry about just having no phone service.

2012-05-11 07:58:00 | No UPS, no batteries, no power failure, no changing the call forwarding yourself on the fly, no cheap national / international / cellular calling, no bundled "3-way calling / Caller ID" features... ;-)
