1251364 2012-01-01 21:09:00 Had enough excitement yet? :)

How long are you here for? Work or holiday? Still plenty to do though some aren't exactly low cost, unfortunately . Apart from Quake Tourism my suggestions are as follows:

A day in Sumner - walk from Cave Rock along the promenade to Scarborough (stay away from the rocks) for an icecream and a swim at either end . Save this for a nice day though .

Halswell Quarry for a run around .

The Botanical Gardens for another run around . Could go canoeing or rowing on the Avon from the Boat Shed for an hour . Great fun but not particularly cheap . Treat Me or GrabOne sometimes have this on special if you are here for a while .

Willowbank (rather pricey) or Orana Park (not cheap either but may be more interesting) wildlife centres .

Spencer Park - lots of neat climbing stuff, barbeque areas, the beach, mini golf (if it is still open) .

Adrenalin Forest ( . adrenalin-forest . co . nz/christchurch" target="_blank">www . adrenalin-forest . co . nz) at Spencer Park - a challenge and great fun for kids .

Antarctica Centre .

The Museum - currently has the Wearable Art WOW display showing for free .

Skate Park at Thompson Park on Marine Parade, New Brighton . Also has climbing stuff and flying fox .

Pirate's Cove (http://www . adventuregolf . co . nz/) mini golf - not really cheap at $38 for the family though .

If you have access to mountain bikes Bottle Lake forest and Macleans Island have awesome easy mountain bike tracks . Walking in the Bottle Lake forest is enjoyable too and the kids can make huts .

A walk around Travis Swamp will burn off the kids' energy .

Walk around the Southshore Spit at the end of Rockinghorse Road is good fun at low tide . DO NOT try swimming to Shag Rock on the other side, the current is extremely strong and plenty have drowned trying .

Drive through the tunnel to Lyttelton to see the ships then drive to Governor's Bay and back over the hill to Christchurch .

Go to Akaroa for the day .

Can't think of any more at the moment .

1251366 2012-01-01 23:00:00 I forgot to post the link to playgrounds ( . ccc . govt . nz/cityleisure/recreationsport/sportsrecreationguide/childrensplaystructures . aspx" target="_blank">www . ccc . govt . nz) that might be worth checking out . Not sure if any are out of action these days but no harm in having a look .

If the boys like swimming then they will like Jellie Park . Other pools are here ( . ccc . govt . nz/cityleisure/recreationsport/index . aspx" target="_blank">www . ccc . govt . nz) .

We used to love going swimming at Corsair Bay down the road from Lyttelton but I'm not sure that it is quite so family-friendly these days .

There is also ice skating ( . alpineice . co . nz/times_%26_prices/school_holiday_session_times_%26_prices" target="_blank">www . alpineice . co . nz) but again, it doesn't come under "cheap" entertainment .

A report on activities undertaken and their success or lack of it is required, please .

I was thinking about it, but never really bothered.

Just wondered if 100 acres was really enough.

1251370 2012-01-02 09:17:00 I was going to suggest taking the boys to clamber around on Castle Rock on the Summit Road . . . but just been told that's not a goer . Wimpy types reckon its dangerous and crumbly . Didn't stop my 5yr old daughter years ago, good fun and magnificent views .

Willowbank, museum, the botanic gardens with children's splash pools is excellent . Orana Park, Wigram air museum, you could spend a week exploring Banks Peninsula but the kids would murder you . QE 2 pool - No wait - ;)

QE 2 pool - No wait - ;)Castle Rock has just about had it . During the Sept 2010 quake large rocks on it fell off and slid down the hill, some coming down onto the Lyttelton tunnel road . Some of the larger slabs were romoved by chopper . Since the Feb quake Geotechs have been blasting and rolling loose rock down the hill so they cant come down during the shakes through peoples homes . It looks nothing like it used to and yes, I would think it is probably fenced off to the public .
A few pics from the hill the gondola goes up - this was after the Sept quake taken last Christmas, more damage has been done since with the Feb, June, etc quakes .

1251372 2012-01-02 19:43:00 So all those excellent climbing routes have gone now? I guess someone will have to make new ones and write a new guide book to climbing in Chch gary67 (56)
