Not sure if they make coloured bulbs in the energy efficient range.

1251856 2012-01-03 05:43:00 I SoCal we had a legal requirement to not use incandescent lights outdoors - next to the Hale telescope on Mount Palomar, so we had to use motion detectors to only allow them to run when they detected motion.

OK - but the CFLs can't be used for that purpose, since they require a warm up and then need to get the whole electro-chemical reaction thing going before they get turned off.

Imagine: Thief trips detector - householder tries to see what's the commotion, but the bulb isn't hot enough and all one can do is ask the perp to wait until you can see his face.

Yeah - a really good 'um there!
That's rubbish the ones we have are so close to being instant light if you blink you wouldn't notice the difference, the older ones had that delay but it has been long fixed

1251858 2012-01-03 07:25:00 I have to agree with gary67.

When CFLs were introduced to NZ about 5 years ago (?) the market was flooded with junk that gave CFLs a bad name. SJ is lucky to be bypassing all that

1251859 2012-01-03 07:32:00 I'd agree with Gary, I started buying these things more than 10 years ago and the difference since then is very noticeable, modern ones are virtually instant and even the older ones were over half brightness immediately with around a minute to reach full brightness so it's not like it's dark when you switch one on. I use 20 watt bulbs in the house mostly, I do like to see and I don't quite buy the 5 to 1 efficiency claimed over incandescent. It seems more like 4 to 1 to me, maybe because it's a different kind of light.

I have two 8 watt ones in my outdoor coach light housings on the porch, I love that I can leave them on all night and not use enough power to worry about. Plenty bright enough to find your way to the front door and unlock it.
I also use one in the garage door opener which comes on for a few minutes whever the door is opened or closed, been in there 8 years so far and not had to change it yet. The incandescent ones blew every few months, I don't think they like being mounted sideways in an enclosed space.

Embrace the technology, and if tree hugging bothers you rejoice in the fact they are filled with toxic chemicals and carcinogens. seriously though if you ever break one don't breathe the dust and dispose of it carefully.
Don't do it because you're supposed to, do it because it saves you money.

I want to move on to LED lights which are supposedly even more efficient and long lasting, but at this stage still far too costly so I'm sticking with CFL.

1251860 2012-01-03 08:40:00 No problems with CFL bulbs here either. All the lights in the house are CFLs.
:)

1251861 2012-01-03 16:31:00 Here's the rub: CFLs are on the edge of being outlawed too for their mercury content and the next viable option is/are the LEDs.

Ever buy any of those LEDs?

1251862 2012-01-03 18:06:00 The mercury content in a CFL is minimal and it only comes out when you smash one of the bulbs. If you dispose of them properly no problem.
:)

1251863 2012-01-03 19:01:00 They charge us $25.00 each for HazMat disposal here.

How many people do you think are gonna just toss them in the trash and not say anything - or worse, toss them alongside the road?

Why do you need coloured bulbs prefect? Do you need a red one for your porch??
