13529 2001-06-03 01:30:00 Why, when carrying out a disc defrag, does it get half way thru and then stop and start again, I have turned off the screen saver, what other programs need turning off ?? Guest (0)
13530 2001-06-03 01:45:00 simply boot into safe mode and run defrag from there. or go buy nortons speed disk. Guest (0)
13531 2001-06-03 04:17:00 Hello Anne,
I had the same problem.Press Ctrl / Alt / Delete key simultaneously, - the window which opens shows all the programmes which are running at the time.Close them all except 'Explorer' and 'Systray' also disable your screensaver. Actually I didn't manage to close all the programmes, but it still worked, just close as many as you can.The defragmentation process may still stop and restart, but each time it should get a bit further, mine took about four hours. Good luck. :-)

Thankyou for your info, Forgive my naivety as I am new to computers, but I've Pressed the ctrl/alt/del keys and a close program box comes up with about a dozen programs in it, but how do I actually close them? Also I thought I was disabling my screen saver, but it keep coming back on!! I have been right clicking the body of the screen, then a Display properties box comes up, which I click on background and click on 'None' and then apply, I do the same in the screen saver tab as well. I am running Webshots as a screen saver.
Cheers anne

13533 2001-06-03 07:50:00 Anne if you are having problems defragging the best option is to start your computer in Safe Mode. This is kind of a light version of Windows & only loads what is needed. Pressing Ctrl\Alt\Del & unchecking programs could cause you problems if you don't really know what your are doing.
To start in safe mode click Start, Shut down, Restart, click OK, and then press and hold the CTRL key until the Microsoft Windows Startup Menu appears. (For some machines, you can use F8 instead of CTRL to bring up the Microsoft Windows Startup Menu). Enter the number for Safe Mode, and then press ENTER. Then go through the defrag process as you would normally.
