| 13457 | 2001-06-01 02:50:00 | My computer takes ages to start up about 2-3mins.It is a P111 350Mhz with a 10gb hard drive and 256 mb memory.It didnt always take this long and I have deleted a lot of files from the system the drive is 50% full.When up and running it is as quick as ever.Help please. | Guest (0) | ||
| 13458 | 2001-06-01 03:25:00 | Hi Alan, if you are running win 9x then press F8 when the 'Starting windows' text comes up (before the graphical splash screen)and select step by step start up. This will prompt you as each driver/app/util loads during startup. Most should only take a few seconds to load. I guess one of them is taking most of that 2-3 mins on it's own. Once you locate the slow loading app you can decide what to do about it. |

Check that the DMA mode for your HDD has not been disabled(start/settings/control panel/system/device manager, then go to the properties for your HDD). 2. Try defragmenting your drive. This will speed up access times to the hard drive. 3. You could also try running Disk Cleanup and the Maintenance Wizard. Both these programs will assist in faster operation of the computer and the maintenance Wizard should improve startup times. |

| 13460 | 2001-06-01 12:49:00 | Hello Alan The other prime reason for slow starting of a PC, is to many programmes set to autorun if you are running win98 or ME go to start>> run, and type in 'msconfig' then click on the startup tab and uncheck any utilities you don't need running all the time, the only ones I normally leave are sys tray,power profile, and any antivirus you may be running all the rest can be unchecked. also if you have deleted a lot of files a registry clean will not go a miss, get hold of the freeware programme regcleaner, available by typing the name into any search engine, then do an auto registry clean, finally defragment your hardrive. Things should now be much quicker starting, if not as earlier mentioned you probably have a rogue driver somewhere. Alan |
