| 13438 | 2001-05-31 18:37:00 | Is there a way to stop the default request to save dailogue box appearing when exiting a Microsoft program. For instance, I have an Excell file which I regularly open set up with various formulae for calculating various interest amounts. When I exit the program I do not want to save it in its changed form but sometimes in my haste I hit the default 'yes' box to save it and it changes my original file. I would prefer to turn off the 'request to save a file' dialogue box when exiting. |

To make a file read-only, right-click on the file name in Explorer, and (from the General tab), click on the tick in the read-only attributes box. | Guest (0) | ||

Don't change your standard shortcut, if you have one, or you'll always open the file. Right-click on the desktop, select New and then Shortcut. The command line entry you must create would be a single line something like this:- 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\EXCEL.EXE' /r 'C:\My Documents\book1.xls' where 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\EXCEL.EXE' is the path and location of Excel itself (as on my Windows 98 machine), /r is the flag to open the named file as read-only, and 'C:\My Documents\book1.xls' is the path and name of the file. If you try invoking this when Excel is already open, you will probably get a message about 'personal.xls' already being open. You can choose 'read-only' and proceed, or 'cancel' and close the already-open Excel session before trying again. |
