Too many variables to check via a discussion group.

13433 2001-05-31 15:19:00 Tip #1. Don't go to a IP help desk to fix connection problems unless you are sure the fault is at their end. They cannot properly diagnose software issues on your computer over the phone (this is definitely a hands-on procedure)and generally cause more problems than they fix. Prime example: A customer with a newly reinstalled PC kept getting rejected when she tried to connect to her IP's site. By the time the IP help desk had finished, the Windows setup was so badly damaged it was quicker to reinstall than fix. The fault - she was using the wrong logon ID.

There are so many things that can go wrong with dial-up connections and without the exact error message I couldn't even guess what yours is. It could be a missing or corrupted file, especially if the computer had a virus.

I would suggest a visit to the Knowledge Base at microsoft.com/ if you want to try faultfinding. However, in the long run, a reinstall of Windows might be the quickest option.
