13548 2001-06-03 03:50:00 Occasionally I want to delete a web-address in the drop-down menu of the address bar in my IE5.There are times when I don't want other people to see what I entered. Could someone tell me please if this is possible, - I can't do it. Would appreciate it very much, - thanks. Guest (0)
13549 2001-06-03 04:39:00 To clear the history in IE5, go to tools, internet options and click 'clear history'. Guest (0)
13550 2001-06-03 10:20:00 Just bear in mind that this will delete all items in your history folder.

You can goto the History folder and delete individual entries, but the Address bar doesn't take these deletions into account.

The answer can be found in the big bad registry (do not edit if faint of heart). Information on this can be found here:

support.microsoft.com

Best of luck.

13551 2001-06-03 19:49:00 Open REGEDIT.EXE located in your windows folder and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Internet Explorer \ TypedURLs. select the offending url, hit delete then enter. done. Guest (0)
13552 2001-06-04 04:12:00 ...also, be aware that Internet Explorer keeps a record of your browsing history in an 'index.dat' file which anyone can view. The easiest way to locate this file is through the Find function off the Start bar.

In the Named box, type 'C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files' (sans quotes) and C:DRIVE (where that is your main drive) in the Look-in box, then press Enter or click Find now.

In the results page, scroll down to find the 'Index.dat' file. It will vary in size - maybe more than 2MB even. You will be unable to open or view the file directly, so use the following:

Right click on file and click 'Copy'. Then, right click on your desktop and click 'paste'. Right click on the file and click 'rename' - then change the file name to something like 'index_bla.dat'.

Next, double click on the renamed file and choose 'open with Word pad' (chances are it will be too big for your Notepad) ...and scroll down to read your history.

Be ready for a surprise!!!

To empty the contents of your 'Index.dat' (or at least trim it down to around 30kb and clear the history) use either of the following:

(i) with IE5x Go: Start > shut down > Restart in MS DOS > Okay. At the DOS prompt type 'del c\windows\tempor~1\content.ie5\index.dat' (sans quotes). Press Enter then restart your system.

(ii) with IE4x Go: Start > shut down > Restart in MS DOS > Okay. At the DOS prompt type 'del c\windows\tempor~1\index.dat' (sans quotes). Press Enter then restart your system.

Happy surfing,
