13584 2001-06-03 22:19:00 I have 3 ISP's Freenet, Zfre and Xtra. Just recently I could not access Xtra home page using Xtra , the system just hung up. Using Freenet I was in within 30 seconds.
Xtra Help solve the problem by switching me to a new dail up number. Then the 2nd problem of reaching the verifing password stage and crash.
Xtar Help blamed Windows 98 and so we reloaded Windows and the problem eased although it still appears from time to time.
Question. If it was Windows why did Freenet and Zfree work OK.
Have others had this problem and was blaming Windows an out for Xtra.

13585 2001-06-03 23:08:00 Hi Win,

I had a similar problem a week or so ago. Using Xtra it would idal up and connect but not send or receive anything. It was connected at 48000 bps but when I did ping tests there was no response to any IP address.

I was able to connect to the net with ZFree with no problems, and I was able to connect to Xtra ok using my log in details on my mother's computer.

When I first rung Xtra I got a helpful guy who suggested adding extra settings strings to the modem properties, but this didn't work. I also made sure I have the latest modem drivers, but this was no go either.

I have an HP with a Lucent Win Modem, and I was looking sideways at the whole setup thinking it was to blame, but couldn't understand why Xtra was the only ISP playing up.

I rung Xtra back and got a really grumpy person the second time who suggested re-loading windows and / or reformatting. This I didn't want to do and didn't see the need to.

I found some good tips here: 808hi.com and managed to get it connecting and transmitting/receiving ok, but at a slow speed (21600).

In the end I swapped my modem with my mothers (which was in a system I put together for her using a $60 56k modem), and now I connect at 52000 all the time with great throughput (use system monitor to check), and mum connects to ZFree at 48000 with no problems.

This may not help too much in solving your problem but I think it shows up some problems Xtra has with particular modems.

13586 2001-06-04 06:40:00 Hi
I have been through what you have described and have given up on Xtra. The problem now seems to be minimal but the area I live in had a lot of bad connections to Xtra. I was helping to maintain a local network and all users were very frustrated at not being able to connect to the net via the server. We could make a connection but no data transmitted. A ping test showed this. Xtra?s response was 'if this were a major problem then everyone would be complaining'. My point to them was for the average user if they cannot connect they assume the net was busy and try again later. Because of the intermittent nature of the fault, 1 out of 3 attempts would connect successfully. We did try various fixes with no luck. I got the same responses from Xtra as you (OS, DUN error) but I found the problem on 6 different computers, running various OS with internal and external modems. These are the computers I tried personally, there were plenty more I was told about having problems I didn?t look at.

I do not have an answer but if enough people complain something might get done about it.

13587 2001-06-04 09:12:00 Welcome to the club. I have had all the above problems for the last 3 weeks, and all the same answers. I have been trying to upload a website and it has been murder. I have 2 computers one with the latest dynalink modem and one with a Lucent. One of them still cannot surf (Lucent) connects but nothing in or out. The other one seems ok for the last few days so it's fingers crossed. But I have had these problems sporadically over the last few years and if xtra don't get thetr stuff together real quick then I'm off somewhwere else and my phone a/c at home and work along with the cellphones will going with it Guest (0)
13588 2001-06-04 09:42:00 Spoke too soon didn't I.
My connection has just started playing up again and I see there is another post a wee bit further down with similar problems.
Any suggestions for a reliable stable ISP?

13590 2001-06-05 22:47:00 i have had the same problems with Xtra. I have tried a new modem, tried my old modem in another computer, taken my whole system to someone elses house and all with the same results, a connection happens but with no communication.
I ended up having a go with someone elses ISP connection at my house with all my (faulty)equip and never had a problem. After this i am considering changing to World-Net which gets excellent feedback from users and is as affordable as XTRA.

13591 2001-06-07 08:29:00 I have been using Paradise for 4 months now and my download speed is nearly always around 48-52K. Every now & then I use my mother's Xtra dialup on my computer and straight away I notice a difference. Dialing in & page loading is slower - even their own home page just hangs. Sometimes I can't use Xtramail at all, so I think maybe their server must be shot or something (or maybe rats chewing the wires). I'm an extramural student and need a reliable connection to the Massey database so I'll be sticking with Paradise for sure. As for Xtra whenever I've spoken to them they come across as typical big business, not really interested to what us peasants have to say - next customer please... Guest (0)
