13608 2001-06-04 09:24:00 In your May issue, P88, in the article on too-fast shutdowns - you mention the situation where the system hangs at a blank screen with a flashing cursor, but say that this problem doesn't occur with 98SE. I have 6 computers running in a school library - all identical - running 98SE and they all hang as above on shutdown. I have tried applying all relevant patches, and the fix you suggest in the article is not an option as there is no 'disable fast shutdown' box to check under the advanced tab.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

13609 2001-06-04 12:10:00 Hi Tom, if the disable fast shutdown option no longer appears in the advanced menu of msconfig, then you must have installed the win98 fast shutdown suppliment which disables fast shutdown and then removes the facility to enable it again. However some third party software may have set the registry key that tells windows that fast shutdown is enabled so check this key using regedit at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Shutdown the key is FastReboot and is equal to 1 if FSD is enabled and 0 if it is disabled.
If all checks out go to the MS knowledge base and search for Q238096 How To Troubleshoot Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Problems this lists a number of possible causes.
Hope this helps PC.
