13830 2001-06-08 02:34:00 HI,
Two in one:

I am unable to stop certain programs loading at startup, so I use the selective startup option in msconfig to get around this. Is there any danger of using selective startup every time I startup. ie will It damage anything?

Secondly my 56Kbit/s modem connects at 28bKbit/s or a max of 32Kbit/s. In my old house, the phone jack was miles from the computer, so I had a 15m extension cord, but was still able to get faster speeds. Now my phone jack is closer, and so 10m of the cable lies coiled under my desk. Will this be affecting my speed?

PS. I rent, and so cannot go and bash holes in the wall to rewire the phone jack. I have checked the existing one and it seems ok. Any ideas?

13831 2001-06-08 06:47:00 Ok for the startup problems, I presume you have checked the Windows 'Startup' folder at C:\Windows\StartMenu\Programs\Startup

(or something like that) for the offending program. If that doesn't fix it, they are most likely being started through the registry.

If u are interested I can tell u where the relevant keys are to delete, but ONLY if you are comfortable with meddling in the registry.

For your dialup speed troubles, since you are using the same extension cord (and presumably same hardware/software config), then either the cable was damaged during the shift OR your phone line into your new house is inferior to the one at your old place.
That is exactly what happened to me. I went from connections of 52-54K down to at best 44K just by moving to a flat with older skody phone cable.
