| 13817 | 2001-06-08 01:33:00 | Anyone know where the Win98se registry settings are for the modem dialspeed in milliseconds? In win95, you could just type S11=xx into the 'extra settings' box under Configure for the modem, where xx is the pause you WANT between tone pulses in milliseconds. It doesn't work on Win98! |

Lower numbers equals faster dialing. If your having problems connecting try increasing the number until it works. However apparently this may not work as planned in some countries and with some modems. If you don't mind messing with the registry you could try the following to optimise (>200%)a dial up connection - make sure you BACK UP THE REGISTRY first though. By default Windows hard codes the value of MTU to equal 1500 bytes. This value is adequate for normal LAN networking, but when your'e connecting to the Internet with a modem this value is too high. This can show itself in different ways, the most noticeable affect is less than peak performance. By adjusting this value to more closely match the requirements of a modem Internet connection, huge performance gains can be achieved. 1. To change the settings you first have to find the details of your Dial-Up Adapter. 2. Find the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\Root\Net and within there will be one or more sub-keys such as 0000, 0001 ... 3. Open each key and find the one that contains the value of 'DeviceDesc' equal to 'Dial-Up Adapter'. 4. Within that key there will also be another sub-key named 'Bindings'. Open the 'Bindings' sub-key and you will find a string name like 'MSTCP\0000'. Take note of the four digit number after 'MSTCP' (in this case 0000) and use it in the next step. 5. Now go to the key 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\Network\MSTCP' and expand the sub-key with the same four digit number as from the previous step. 6. In this key you will find a value called 'Driver' and it will be equal to something similar to 'NetTrans\0002'. Take note of this four digit number (in this case 0002) and use it in the next step. 7. Now open the key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Class\NetTrans] below there will be one or more sub-key's. Expand the key with the name equal to the four digit number from the previous step. 8. Within this key create a new string value named 'MaxMTU' and set it to '576', and also add a string value named 'MaxMSS' and set it to '536'. 9. Then exit the registry and restart your computer. | 13819 | 2001-06-08 06:30:00 | Thanks Steve. I wasn't actually trying to change the MTU at all, or the transfer speed, but I may give that a go anyway. You are right about the dialspeed settings though. This is exactly what I have changed in the past, but it does NOT work on Win98. It did work fine on my system until I upgraded from win95 to 98 and it no longer works. I have tried changing the setting on several different machines (different hardware config etc) and it ALWAYS works on Win95, but NEVER on Win98. Haven't tried on NT, 2k or Me yet. Any other ideas? I will have to check out the website you showed. Thanks for posting :) |

Whilw you are there have a look at LoggingPath note the file name and then open the file in notepad and check that the extra setting is being sent to the modem and is accepted. The other way is to click on the 'view log' button on the Advanced connection settings dialogue box just under 'extra setting' HTH PC. |

| 13821 | 2001-06-11 08:31:00 | Win98 definatly works with this setting. I'm currently using S11=30, after upgrading all my drivers, reinstaaling etc. | Guest (0) | ||
| 13822 | 2001-06-12 01:37:00 | Peter Cox Thanks for the comments. I finally had a look at the log file and registry. I found: The log file showed that the 'extra setting' string is NOT being sent to the modem. Also, the 'extra setting' is not being saved when I click OK to close the relevant dialog boxes etc. If I save the S11=40 string, click ok, ok etc, and then go back in the box is empty! Also, in the registry, I have no UserInit subkey where you indicated (or nearby). I'm guessing the two are related. How can I make my system actually save the 'extra setting' so it is sent to the modem? Cheers for your help. |
