13794 2001-06-07 11:21:00 Using IE5.5 my connection used to automatically disconnect after 10 minutes after I had forgotten to close the connection myself, or when I closed the last open internet window. This has stopped happening causing my phone bill to rocket.

Under Tools/Internet Options/Connections/Settings/Advanced both the 'Disconnect if idle for 10 minutes' and 'Disconnect when connection may no longer be needed' boxes are ticked. What else could be preventing the auto disconnect?

Your advise much appreciated.

13796 2001-06-07 21:03:00 Sorry - got cut off somehow.
Not sure if this will work but there is another setting you could try: ControlPanel\Modem\Properties\Connection - & in the 'Call Preferences' area tick the 'Disconnect a call if idle for more than' & set your own time.

13797 2001-06-08 05:58:00 Thanks Paul, tried that and no difference I'm afraid. I watched however the internet status while leaving keyboard and mouse untouched and noticed at times the 'bytes sent' increase regardless. I am now wondering if this is RealPlayer sending junk out and causing my PC to think the Internet is still in use. Does this sound likely? I have now dropped the idle time limit to the minimum 3 minutes (under IE5), and will see if this beats the system. Still not working is the auto close on closing of the last internet window.

Thanks again

13798 2001-06-08 06:59:00 Until some guru arrives to solve your problem, I thought of another thing to try. Do you have ZoneAlarm installed? (Great Free firewall by the way) If so you can set the internet lock to engage after a certain time of inactivity that way hopefully the modem or browser disconnect may kick in. You can also selectively block eg Real Player or Eamil progams which may be trying to access the net as well if you want to. Guest (0)
13799 2001-06-11 11:03:00 Thanks Paul, I will try the zone alarm from the June cover disk, after I have finished playing around with Delphi. Great cover disk by the way.

P.S. Reducing the time out to 3 minutes has also enabled the time out to function. This is a little short but until I try out the zone alarm, it will do in the mean time.

Thanks again
