13869 2001-06-09 11:05:00 We have an AMD 2/300 machine with 128MB of RAM and a 10GB hard drive, previosly running Win 98 SE in a 2GB partition. The other 8GB was unformatted free space.

I want to install NT 4 to another partition and run a dual boot system, but have been having trouble getting NT to install.

The first time I tried to install NT, everything went well until the reboot between the DOS install phase and the GUI wizard when the hard drive was not found on rebooting. During the earlier procedure I had created three new FAT16 disk partitions of 2.0, 2.0 and 1.8 GB and told NT to install to one of the new 2GB partitions.

I then turned the machine off and rebooted using MSDOS in order to run FDISK to at least get the hard drive to boot again. I changed the active drive back to the original C:\ partition and restarted the machine successfully with all C:\ data intact.

I then tried to run any likely looking files on the newly installed NT directory in the hope that the setup could be continued.
The files were coming up with an error which unfortunately I didn't write down at the time, but it was about 'figures being wrong', something about 'less than 1 x 1000' or some such thing. Maybe this was something to do with me trying to run them from Win98?

I then deleted the temp install files and configured and formatted all of the new drives using win 98 explorer so we now have the original C:/ FAT32 2.0GB, as well as D:/ FAT16 2.0GB, E:/FAT 16 1.84GB and F:/ FAT16 2.0GB.

Next time I tried installing it came up with an error message in the initial
phase of installation (NT Executive, disk one) of: '\ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded. The error code is 4.' I thought this may have been from the floppy disc so I consulted the books and tried installing directly from the CD at the DOS prompt. This tried to install NT to C:\ and produced an error message about the drive being
corrupt or unformatted (I guess because NT uses FAT16 or NTFS and does not recognise FAT32?). I tried using switches to force it to install to F:/ but couldn't
figure out the correct syntax. I then wrote a new floppy from the CD Rom and
tried that with the same error as before.

Does anybody out there have any ideas or can shed any light on why this won't install or what the errors could mean? I do not want to have to reformat the entire drive, I would rather just leave it at the status quo and then go to NT when it eventually crashes (as they do...)

Many thanks
Megan

13870 2001-06-09 23:55:00 Your problems all stem from your C: partition being FAT32.

You could try copying your current C: to another partiton. First format the partiton with the format /s command eg Format d: /s'.
In Windows disable virtual memory, reboot and then Start - Run and enter the command 'xcopy c:\*.* /e /h /k /r d:' (presuming you want to copy it to d:, and don't type the ''s)
Make sure the partiton you copy to is made active with fdisk. Restart and change you BIOS setting to boot from drive D and see that everying is working.

If it is you can then delete your C: partiton and create a FAT16 one and install NT. NT will set up a boot menu to enable you to choose which System you wish to use.
