14177 2001-06-15 10:18:00 I have been using ,without any problems' MS Internet Explorer 5.5 for a year or so ,(I have Windows 98 SE), but a day os so ago , for no reason at all, the MS Explorer 'dial up connection ' window appears after boot up has finished....It is a nuisance...I have tried everything....checked the autoexec.bat and ate 'properties-advanced' , unchecked the 'show internet explorer on desktop , and even reverted my drive using 'GoBack' , but still it appears right at the end of bootup. Can you please help? Guest (0)
14178 2001-06-15 11:05:00 Hi

The same problem happened to me after i installed a program called Bearshare (a file sharing program, like Napster). When i uninstalled it the problem stopped.

14179 2001-06-15 11:37:00 it sounds like you have a program like mIRC or ICQ or bearshare running on windows startup..

Goto START and RUN.. type

msconfig

There should be a tab where all the programs that run on windows startup are shown.
Uncheck any internet programs that run on startup.

I'm sorry I can't give a more detailed description of the msconfig box.. itz just that i haven't been using win98SE for quite a while now.

I think you also have to check selective startup to make this work anyway i'm sure you'll be able to figure it out...

You also check which programs run on startup in the system registry. Follow the order given below..

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE ----->
SOFTWARE ----->
MICROSOFT ---->
WINDOWS ---->
RUN

All startup programs should be in the RUN 'folder'

Use regedit command to access the registry..

oh and also back-up the registry just to be safe..

14180 2001-06-15 14:15:00 bearshare (if i rember correctly) is adware supported. at a guess its proberly left the ad part still on your system just like imesh puts a trojan in your system.
i would suggest you give ad-aware a go. www.lavasoft.de.

if you do get rid of 'it' go check later on just in case its reinstall itself back in.

i'm assumeing that you have already checked that it isn't a program (eg virus cheaker) trying to check for updates.

14181 2001-06-15 22:22:00 Thank you all for comments...I had checked the registery, but am not experienced in this. The reference to a recently installed 'bearshare' pointed me in the right direction..the penny dropped...I had just downloaded an update (vs 2.30) for Sync-it. I then found that in the preferences, there is a choice of 'Connect using dial up networking' and 'Dial when network connection is not present'.
I had mistakenly checked the latter when it should have been to connect only when I use the internet. QED !
Solved the problem.
