| 14164 | 2001-06-15 03:17:00 | When I try to defrag I get a message 'An error occurred while ScanDisk was attempting to correct the previous error..' It then tells me to to complete a thorough check of the drive etc and then conduct standard test. But when I attempt a thorough test I get the same message as before. When I click OK I get the message 'Scandisk must now restart because another program (or Windows itself) wrote to your disk .. etc' Nothing I can do seems to let me ScanDisk or defrag. I have tried the Microsoft site but it appears worse than useless. I have spent all damned day on it and am going nuts! Does anyone know about this - PLEASE! |

This will stop other programs writing to your disk. if no luck post again, steve |

Straight after posting my message I went to make a cup of tea and while waiting for the kettle to boil I had a sudden rush of blood to the head! I went back to the computer and restarted it in DOS and ran ScanDisk. It worked perfectly, found all sorts of cross-linked files and goodness knows what else and fixed everything with absolutely no problem. Then I went back into Windows and ran defrag and Presto! it worked perfectly - and now the machine runs like a rocket again. And that is after a completely frustrating all-day messing around with Windows Help files (including Windows online Help), Microsoft online Help and God knows what else, including ringing a local computer firm. Who said Dos should be done away with?! | Guest (0) | ||
