His modem got worse at connecting over a few days..
He uninstalled it..reinstalled it..new drivers...
it gets recognised at com 3 but he gets 'cannot detect modem' message..
wondering if the modem has actually packed up with it going down gradually like that..any help much appreciated
Thanks Pete

14098 2001-06-13 11:05:00 Hi This tends to be very esoteric unless you have advanced degrees (which I haven't) but try to disconect all possible devices from the computer and make sure the networking components are installed and restart. I have found this works for me in the past. Windoz may just get it right!!! Guest (0)
14099 2001-06-13 13:30:00 try seeing if there is a com 3 listed in the com ports, try removing this com port & reboot, them try doing a modem dianostics on it Guest (0)
14100 2001-06-14 12:43:00 Get him to check his phone line is OK. I recently had a problem with my setup. I had just reinstalled Windows but could not get the modem to connect. There was a problem with the Network settings which I resolved. But we had changed the phone at about the same time, and I don't know why but I cannot connect to the internet properly with that phone plugged in. I have to disconnect the phone. Get him to try changing the modem connection speed to a slower speed. Slowing down the modem allows me to connect with the offending phone plugged in. You can try typing 'AT+MS=V34' into the Extra Settings place in the modem properties dialog. Guest (0)
