14266 2001-06-17 09:43:00 I want to use my PC, to connect to the internet at an address where there is no phone connection by using my GSM cell phone. What hardware do I need to accomplish this? Guest (0)
14267 2001-06-17 10:21:00 check it out at a cellphone shop. you can buy kits with software and connectors but they are brand/model specific. vodafone has a one off connection setup fee (they may have changed that so please cheak with your cellphone company). Guest (0)
14268 2001-06-19 00:06:00 Hi;

I have done this b4 and got it working.
Either Telecom ot Vodafone right??

OK if Telecom u need a pcmcia card + cellphone and a cellular cable for use b/w card and phone. Or perhaps Infra red if your phone support thus saving $$ on card and cable. Or just a serial cable from phone if it supports. Also u may need to sign up for a mobile service on a contract. Not sure if telecom lets u use free minutes for data .. they do however have data calling rates. Prerpay not sure too - need to check with telecom.

Vodafone - I have use this b4. You need the same equip as above of either card/cable or IR or cable to serial port. IR is such as Nokia 8210, 8110, 6210, 6110 etc with a builtin IR on phone. Nokia 5110 and the like with no port can do with a cable to serial port. Older ones such as Nokia 3810 need a cable and pcmcia card. Vodafone network can use free minutes for data too - and by signing up for fax/data service of $25 one of payment. You also get a fax no. which people can fax to (a 021 number) u can forward faxes within voicemail to another number like a computer with fax or a normal fax machine.

Now knowing what u need, buy them and connect them up and setup a normal dialup account and install cellualr modem driver and run email/www as normally like a standard modem but much slower. Vodafone network is limited at 9.6k and telecom 14.4k regardless what phone can handle cos its the restriction on their network. Depending on your phone it may come with software on cd-rom such as the Nokia 6210 and others if it does its a bonus - its free!! if not u may need to purchase software alone or perhaps it come with the hardware you are about to purchase. The Nokia 5110 package does not sell cable/software separaetely it only have cable and software together - ...

Hope this helps
