| 14499 | 2001-06-22 23:30:00 | Hi everyone! My original 15' Unisys (EVG 151 - COL) monitor went very dark, so yesterday I picked up a 2nd hand older one (14' KTX SVGA PLUS)FOR $95 from a computer repair business.Took it home and plugged her in. The brightness is good, but the screen is way smaller (ie: there are big black areas around the desktop now...)and the kids DOS game which was loaded on the computer won't display - all you get are horizontal coloured bars on the screen. I looked in the setup utility of the computer and saw that the monitor (I presume it's telling me about the monitor I've just plugged in!) has a refresh rate of 60hz and it also showed that there was 'no support' for resolutions set at 800x600 or higher. Does any of this MEAN anything to anyone? Is this why the game won't display correctly? We could (I suppose...) live with the smaller desktop, but the kids will be getting this computer now as I've bought a new one and they'll DEFINITELY need the games to work! I'll probably just take it back, but I thought just in case someone can tell me how to make things work, I'd post this query. Cheers Lynne Hawkins PS - How on earth do you tell what version of Windows 95 you've got installed? I can't find any info in any help file that tells you where to look... |

The problem with the monitor might be the settings are still set for the old one and the new one isnt recognised. firstly go 'start/settings/control panel/system/device manager and try update the monitor driver. |

My OS is Windows 95 Version 4.00.950 (thanks for your help in THAT area!) I've changed the refresh rates in the setup utility to match those of the Unisys Monitor, but that doesn't seem to have done anything at all... The game in question is a DOS one called 'Toonstruck' which I think is probably reasonably long in the tooth (assumed this 'cos I bought it at The Warehouse')but it's worked fine on the Unisys monitor. Can you get into the setup utility without having to restart the computer each time? When wildly fiddling around earlier on, I happened upon a window that allowed you to determine the type of monitor you were using - but can't find the dang thing again! (Although, this KTX monitor wasn't included in the list of options anyhow...) I'm only just STARTING with the questions! Come back to me QUICK! Lynne |
