14694 2001-06-28 02:01:00 After having stuffed around with registry backups and copying over win.ini and system.ini files from a previous registry I have managed to stop my PC from being able to transfer and receive date through the modem!!! I can connect without a problem but about 1500 bytes of data goes each way and then nothing...I have been through my ISP helpdesk and have tried everything that they could think of. It appears that the modem, dial-up networking etc is all working fine but something else is causing the problem. Can someone help please. Guest (0)
14695 2001-06-28 03:38:00 Try reloading the TCP/IP settings. It may pay to get back onto your ISP and get them to run you through it,as it would take a little while to explain.
Hope it helps

14696 2001-06-28 04:23:00 Maybe also try re-installing the modem/driver. Guest (0)
14697 2001-06-28 17:56:00 cannot tramit/recieve data upon connecting can happen on a couple of levels.

First you are going to use a simple dos cammand to help identify the problem.
Go to a dos promt:
type 'ping www.pcworld.co.nz' (without the quotion marks..do you get a reply ?
Now run the ping cammand again..'ping 210.48.100.12'..do you get a reply?.

What this test did was to he verifiy the connection to ISP's computer or by sending ICMP echo packets to the computer and listening for echo reply packets. (note : this command is available only if the TCP/IP protocol has been installed.) Did the ping Command work ? If it did not this may be an issue with your Isp assigning you an IP address. From the start menu, go to run and type 'Winipcfg'. Are you being assaigned an IP Address. Do you have an Ip address being assigned to you ?

Right Still not working. Its time to reinstall Dial up-networking. By doing this Not only is dail up-networking fils reinstalled but also Your Network and Communication files ie TCP/IP are also renewed.
To do complete the uninstall of Dialup networking. first remove the dialup adapter. This is found in Start > Settings > Control Pannel > Systems. Scroll down to Adapters and click on the '+' symbol. Highlight dialup adapter and hit delete/remove.
Close down the Systems tab (You may be asked to restart your computer Do not do this). Now back at Control Panel click in to 'ADD/Remove programs' ad then in 'windows Setup' tab. Scroll Down to communications, highlight and click on 'detail' Remove the tick associated with dialup Networking. After hiting Ok/Apply you will be asked to reboot the Pc. Do so.
Upon your Pc booting back up, head back to the Windows setup tab and place the tick agaist 'Dialup networking'. Once hitting ok you will be asked for you windows cdrom, Insert the Cd-rom and allow the new files to be copyed. Upon Request reboot your PC again. Try and Connect can you now?

Next layer up that Internet works on is the browsers, msn etc. If you use Internet explorer you may beable to run the Ie repair program. This is located in Start > Settings > Add/Remove programs > internet tools. If you do not have this option you may need to reinall Ie or if you use another browser reinstall. You can get the installs from the pcworld Cd's (very useful)

Another otpion that is if you have a Firewall installed could be that either you have locked the internet connection off, or by mistake have set a Firewall rule not to allow your browser access to the internet. Depending on your firewall depends on the solution here. But to prove either way disable the firewall and trying connecting and browsing. Does this work?

The last options could be the way your modem is behaving it self for example the dynalink modems you can insert this string in the extra settings box (Sart > Settings > Control Panel > Modems > Properties > Connection > Advanced > Extra Settings): '&F&D2%C1+MS=11,0'
and for the 1456VQH-R PCI Modem, you would use: &F&D2%C1+MS=V34,0.
For your correct Strings you would need to check with you modem manufactor.

Remeber you ISP would love to help you solve this one, So use them, when the internet connection gets tough.

(Note: A very Samll percentage of these types of faults are actaully with the phone line, These are more then likly with software/ or settings)

14698 2001-06-28 20:22:00 Thanks for those tips - unfortunately my ISP helpdesk had talked me through all (nearly) of them. The settings were all fine, the ping test was successful and we re-installed dial-up networking (plus a couple of other moinor things) they then advised that the problem was beyond the level of support they could provide and that I should get a technician to look at it.

I haven't yet tried re-installing IE or Netscape (we use both) so I will give that a crack. I am sure I have checked the firewall option but I'll have another look at that. My feeling is that the modem, dial-up networking and my browsers are all working fine and that the problem is something else. I will try to get the extra settings for the modem suggested by Jess and try that as well but if that does not work does anyone have further suggestions before I fold and get an 'expert' to look at it!!!

Thanks for the suggestions posted to date - I appreciate it.

Cheers
