14642 2001-06-26 23:31:00 When running scan disk on my 95 sys, I turn off the screen saver, then cont/alt/del everything except Sys tray and Explorer, but I still get an error message that says something is writing to my h/d more than 10 times etc. What else can I turn off? Or what can be doing it? Guest (0)
14643 2001-06-26 23:38:00 I'm no expert at this, but this seemed to help me with a similar problem.

From Start/Run type msconfig and Enter.
Select Startup tab and check what is run at Startup. Adware, spyware and similar items do not seem to show on teh ctrl-alt-del sequence, but they show up here. I deselected them, reboot and then run scan disk again.

Also try AdAware from LavasoftUSA.com - free spyware checker. I was amased what I had collected over the years. Also check out grc.com for other security tips.

14644 2001-06-27 04:03:00 Thanks and I will try those, and have downloaded adaware, and will check how that works once I am off the net. As for grc it is quite funny, cos I am not using a firewall, but it says my ports don't exist, and he can't get at my netbios. Strange. Needless to say I did run Shields up to see what would happen. Especially as I am using a freeish isp. Guest (0)
14645 2001-06-27 05:06:00 MSCONFIG is not available in win95.
You could start your pc in safe mode by tapping the f5 or f8 key & see if it will run through scandisk from there,
another way to perform scandisk is to restart your PC in dos mode & at the c:\ prompt type in scandisk c:

hope this helps steve

14646 2001-06-28 17:05:00 If you go to WWW.PowerDefrag.com, you can download the FREE PowerDefrag program which Auotmatically does a safemode defrag then restarts the computer in normal mode again.
Thanks fore helping me in the past.
