1275006 2012-05-13 03:30:00 Hi folks,

Just picked up a another free PC that was going and just stopped. It was a mate's PC and he got rid of it as it was getting a bit out of date. Now here's the prob, I just cleaned out and unistalled programs from the PC's 2 IDE HDD's. I restarted it and it was fine for the next half dozen reboots (for graphics card drivers etc), then chaos. I put in a networking card in (PCI card) then when I rebooted it would not regognise the drives in the BIOS or the Norton Ghost recovery disk. So I took the card out and rebooted...nothing. Then I changed IDE cables and it made no difference. I made sure in the BIOS that boot device priorities were set right, but alas no HDD's were seen by the BIOS. I also tested both HDD's on another system and the drives were recognised. The jumpers were also set right. So I booted up again and then it came up with "disk read error " "Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart"

The OS on the main IDE drive is Windows XP Professional 32BIT SP3

Do you hardened techies know what the trouble is?? :help: Thanks.

1275008 2012-05-13 04:00:00 Yep. I had the one with the OS as Master and the other one as Slave. When I tested them on the other system I had them as Slaves. ChazTheGeek (16619)
1275009 2012-05-13 04:21:00 Have you got them in the correct order on the IDE cable ?? ... master first then slave at end SP8's (9836)
1275010 2012-05-13 05:39:00 So I put the the very end of the cable on slave HDD? ChazTheGeek (16619)
1275011 2012-05-13 07:21:00 If its a blue ribbon, make sure the blue end is on the mobo. Also make sure, the red line (thats on one side of it), is connected to pin 1 on the hdd. And yup the last connection goes to the hdd thats slave Speedy Gonzales (78)

It really only matters if the drives are jumpered as Cable Select.
