2012-01-04 22:43:00 | Any current or former Otago Uni Students? I am trying get a street view (g.co) shot of the entrance (or main campus), to embed in a blog I'm working on.. I don't know the area. The default Google map address for Otago Uni does not seem to have street view. So the address I chose is at 363 Leith Walk at a cluster of ancient buildings. Where's the main entrance (or student union/campus)? Many thanks. | kahawai chaser (3545) | |
2012-01-05 00:03:00 | There isnt really one main entrance to the university and the campus area that most people walk around runs along the river so cant be seen from the road, this is also true for the union building. The best "entrance" I would be suggest would be from southern end of Castle street as from here you can see the main clock tower. (just to confuse things a little, Castle street used to run through the university but has now been absorbed by the university so you will find a castle street north and south of the unversity. I'm thinking of is the southern end of the northern bit) A.

2012-01-05 02:42:00 | Thanks afe66, saved me a lot of clicking about. I think I'm "in" the University (g.co), after passing Cadbury's somewhere, then stopping at the 2 streets you mentioned, then moving forward. Can't really get closer to the tower since any Google [street] view, is off their mapped grid views. | kahawai chaser (3545) | |
2012-01-05 04:18:00 | Try from the other end. ie look up the corner of dundas street and castle street on maps then use the street view to go south down castle street. (sounds like you're approaching from cadbury's which means you're south of the university going north) There are some nice photos of the clock tower on google maps too. A.

2012-01-05 04:31:00 | "The" main entrance would be thru Castle Street and looking onto the Clocktower building on your left. It has the Uni of Otago sign as well with the 10 or 15 speed limit. Not sure if I have a pix of that though. Castle Street towards the Botantical Gardens. That is North I think as North East Valley is up there. Yeah that is corner of Dundas Street. Edit. Nope that's St Davids Street and Castle Street maps.google.co.nz

Did what you's both suggested, click walked down Castle Street, and got a slightly better shot. Really I got confused with N-S orientation (unfamiliar territory), until I just noticed the faint "N" on the map arrows. Might help if there was a "S" and maybe larger/bolder. Castle street- might they had a Castle present? Judging by the historical building styles on Leigh street. If the street was not claimed (like what they did to DB Breweries (g.co) in Papatoetoe) by the University, might have got better shots. Otherwise the tower appears to be obscured by trees when you go around St. David's/Leigh Street. You would think though the admin building would be closer to castle street entry point, if it's at the Tower. But thanks. |

2012-01-06 06:52:00 | Well strictly speaking it probably was at one stage . Go back 100 years when all the university was on the same side of the river, castle street probably ran all the way north, south and if google street view had been present you would have been able to see the clock tower from straight in front . But with all the subsequent developement and closing some streets off you no longer have a pretty drive up to the university clock tower . Didnt stop the university proposing to spend 10m dollars in the 1990's to specifically develope a pretty drive . (Thankfully thrownout) A .
