1252480 2012-01-07 05:53:00 Thats the iwank factor in all its glory, lets hope its not a trait that defines the future.

Many people are going to have a tablet as their first computer, (rather then an iphone, a macbook ultra and the next wanky device that comes along) they will have all their music, movies, books, photos and personal files on it, it will be a video phone, a photo camera, a video camera, a tool for entertainment, communication and learning. it will give them instantly all the information they could ask for.

imagine if you will walking up to a tree while on a school field trip, Holding your tablet up to it and being told exactly what it is, what soils and climate it likes, where its from, what lives off it, Then zoom into a leaf, the structure of the leaf can be named and examined down to the molecular level. Then you can identify the gubs living on the underside of the leaf and what their diet and life cycle is....

You can save a few verbal notes about the item, and then take a photo of it and save to file.

On the bus trip back to school they can fire up facebook, watch a movie, read a book....check their calender/time table, use it as a calculator and catch up on their math...

The touch-keyboard will be only one way of interfacing with a tablet, Siri is an example of this, as is the touchscreen itself, If anyone thinks the future is being locked into a version of the type-writer then they are seriously deluded, and lack imagination.

All I can say is, it is nice to have an Oracle in our midst.

I should say, beginners do like the tablet.

1252481 2012-01-07 05:55:00 Storage isn't really a problem when you stream content from your home network. 3G and wifi speeds where I am are more then adequate for Skype video calls. Plus there is always the cloud you can access.

True but streaming while out and about isn't really up there yet especially if you have a class of 20 kids all trying to stream at once

For the record I consider the iphone to be a tablet in every way, so its no wonder the iwanks find a device redundant when they double up on them.

They are probably too leet for their own good.

Overlays already exist for the tablets, you can point the camera at a city scape and it will tell you what the buildings are and what business are in them, and this is merely the beginning of the beginning, For all we know spoken English may evolve rapidly to suit how we communicate with machines, much as txt writing evolved to fill a need.

Removing the keyboard maybe the catalyst for a huge change in our societies....

1252483 2012-01-07 07:52:00 I repeat, the Ultrabook is the future,

goo.gl

And they made it so right, it has a decent display/trackpad etc a proper competitor for the Macbook Air.

And you're right, an ultrabook is 10x more useful than a tablet if you're wanting a tool.

Good of you to join us, oh oracle.

It seems the pinnacle evolutionary high point of interfaces is the qwerty keyboard.:xmouth:

What an amazing vision. Imagine that, a bunch of keys on a board.

A really skinny board.

1252485 2012-01-07 08:23:00 Thank you for your input, but I'll pass on a cheap chinese piece of junk, as I love my wife too much for such a low blow. Maybe the way I reach my decision escapes you, fair enough, but I believe it should not be too much of a concern for you. We are all different and we live our life with ethical values impressed upon us by way of our education.

Regards

Fair enough.

I think the problem here is working out what we want.

Yours sounds like futuristic educational tool, which will come of course.

The units of which I speak are communication and general day to day info tools, so watch out for the Ultrabook.

Mine is next week, yours is well down the track.

Not at all, its happening now.

There is no problem as such, just a difference of opinion, which leads to discussion.

My views are of course more correct.

1252488 2012-01-07 11:03:00 Streaming things works a lot better in the US where they have muh higher data caps, but over here we're still catching on. Gotta admit I'm loving having a large data cap with Slingshot though, that runs at high-speed. It's brilliant and enables so much. Same for at work. I have all my music on Google Music now, no more taking up my own HDD space, now it's al online. When I'm on 3G I just enable it to play stuff its recently cached that I listened to while on Wifi.

What Metla speaks over is very very close to becoming a reality. Augmented reality I believe is the correct terminology to be precise ;)

1252489 2012-01-07 11:05:00 Also, ther'es not a *lot* of point in waiting for the Transformer Prime. It's like suggesting that somebody doesn't get a dual-core for their first PC and that they should get a quad-core. They're not likely to require it immediately and can always "trade-up" later if they truly find that it's not doing what they want, however remote that possibility is... Chilling_Silence (9)
