14900 2001-07-03 03:48:00 I was just reading a post by S.Y. re internet connection/download speed etc. I have recently got a brand new computer, much more advanced than my previous one yet all of a sudden my internet connection is *painfully* slow - it's completely ridiculous infact. This was never a problem with my last computer so I cannot understand the sudden change of less performance - if anything I thought I might be able to get *more* performance since using such a fast computer. My modem is 56K currently, the same as on my previous computer and I am connected to Infogen (Genesis), exactly the same as before also.
Question...Can someone please tell me how I can check what speed my computer is running at while connected to the internet? Also any other clues to why my connection is so pathetically slow now with my much better computer despite the fact that nothing else has changed?
Thanks :)

14901 2001-07-03 04:17:00 I don't think having a faster computer is going to affect your net connection speed much if at all if your still using the same modem ie. 56k
double click on the 2 little computers in your taskbar and it will show your connection speed ie 48,000bps or something, if its below 40,000bps with a 56k then theres probably some kind of problem.
Check your dialup settings and go through it with your isp also try pinging a few local sites in a dos window, try www.pcworld.co.nz and the average ping time should be well under 200ms.

14902 2001-07-03 06:19:00 the speed shown by the '2 little computers in your taskbar' is your logon speed and has little to do with actual download speed, unless it is reguarly changing eg 28 one day 45 the next. do a test. find a good known server and download a large file. note the rate when its finnished not when it starts. theres heaps of factors involved from phone lines to computer setup to modem retraining.
