14871 2001-07-02 22:22:00 I have been looking around for a USB hub and note that there are powered and unpowered models available apparently both running at the same transfer speeds. Could some advise me what the difference is between these. Other than the price - the unpowered ones are half the price! Guest (0)
14872 2001-07-02 22:45:00 Depends what you are plugging in to them if you buy a usb scanner that is powered only from the usb plug then you plug it into a non powered hub it will not work if you get what I mean.

I would go for the powered as in the future there will be more powered appliances which use the usb port for power as well as communication.

(Side point wait for USB2)

14873 2001-07-04 00:03:00 Some USB devices require power and some don't. If the USB port is not powered then any USB peripheral needing power fails to work.

e.g.
I have several Windows machines and an iMac. The iMac mouse is USB an plugs into the keyboard which also plugs via USB into computer. But an external USB floppy drive plugged into keyboard USB failed as it needed power.

A powered hub allows both powered and non-powered devices. Non-powered USB hub only allows non-powered USB devices

14874 2001-07-05 11:12:00 hi peoples,

I've never seen a device that draws *NO* current, where is the point where it becomes a powered device? Does it use a different pin on the plug?
