14777 2001-06-30 23:47:00 Installed ESS 1868 soundcard (ISA) in computer running Win 95 (P100, 32mb Ram). Win 95 recognises card and installs drivers. No conflicts, exclamation marks, question marks or other probs in Device manager. IRQ5, DMA1 etc all as expected. There is no other soundcard installed.
But.. no sound. Speakers work fine.
Under control Panel> multimedia, the souncard is not a preferred device, so there is no volume control or mixer available to mute it. Under the advanced tab, the devices have the ESS 1868 recognised, but all say:
'Drivers are enabled but not active for some reason.'
How can I make them active?
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the card and its drivers (not just Win 95's drivers) several times with no change and tried the card in a different ISA slot. I am sure that I m missing something simple. Any ideas?

14778 2001-07-01 05:35:00 Some of those sound cards with ESS chipsets were sometimes tricky to get going in Win95.
This is only a last-ditch suggestion...
Download generic ESS drivers from:
www.esstech.com
The package is 1021.zip. Unzip the files onto a floppy.
In Device Manager remove the sound card and drivers.
You could also remove the sound card and re-boot without it. Switch off and re-fit the card re-boot and go into BIOS just to check if there is a PNP/PCI Configuration that lets you assign IRQ 5 to PCI/ISA PnP.
When Windows re-detects the card see if you can get into the 'Have Disk' box and load the drivers from floppy.
In Device Manager under Sound, video and game controllers there should be 2 devices listed;
ES1868 Control Interface, and ES1868 Plug and Play AudioDrive.

If none of that works, maybe someone else can suggest a solution.
Cheers

14779 2001-07-02 05:34:00 Tried it. No luck.
Looked up Win.ini and found the following line:

[Sounds]
SystemDefault=,

Any other ideas? (apart from reformat and install Win 98)
Thanks.
