15314 2001-07-10 09:10:00 Hi

My windows 98 CD has been swapped by computer firm when they installed some new hardware. Unfortunately, this was some time ago and only found out when I came to install a Webcam. That is, I got a nice little pop up message box when I put my windows 98 CD in the cd driver that this cd did not match up with the version on my machine.

There is little chance of recovering the correct CD.
So is there anything I can change in the registry to fix this. I can't uninstall windows 98 and I'm left with this uncomfortable feeling that I may have to reformat the hard drive and reload everything again.

Help!!

15315 2001-07-11 00:17:00 Getting that message usually means that the version of 98 you have on CD is older than the version that you are running.
Right click on My Computer and you will see the version you are running.

If you have the little green cirtificate and/or the win98 manual with it on you can get another copy of your version of WIN98 for the cost of the CD only.

15316 2001-07-11 08:01:00 This may sound stupid but sometimes win98 asks for win98 installation dir and location of driver. Try going back and forth between these if none of these work even if the win98 cd is different it shouldn't make a difference unless the directory structure is different in that case redirect when prompted. I've often used me and 98 disks when in stalling drivers 98 will just look for the driver cab don't know which one from memory

15317 2001-07-11 08:27:00 Hi

Thanks for the advice(yes I have tried the suggested remedy by Karen). Unfortunately, the problem is when I load the new software it asks for the Win98 CD. When I do this it starts to copy files then it asks for the Win98 CD with a specified serial number. The only options are ok or cancel. Pressing cancel quits the install.

As it seems the Win98 CD is an older version of the Win98 on my machine, I may try getting the newer Win98 version and see if that helps, but not sure whether it will overcome the serial number problem. Of course I could upgrade to windows me (not).

15318 2001-07-12 03:31:00 ...the Windows tweak guru, Axel 216, offers the following solution to this problem:

'How to proceed with windows 98 setup without a serial number -

1. When windows 98 starts and you do not have a valid serial number or it is missing press cancel at serial number entry box. Windows will say it can't continue and you will get 'it is now safe to turn off your computer' screen. Restart your computer.

2. As soon as your pc starts keep pressing F8 key to get a option menu. Select boot in safe mode.

3. Yes windows will run and boot in safe mode.

4. Now run regedit and go to hkey_local_machine -> software -> microsoft -> windows-> current version and in it you will find a string value key 'ProductKey'. If it is not there create it. Double click on it and enter any twenty five digit number seperated at five with dash i.e. aaaaa-bbbbb-ccccc-ddddd-eeeee close regedit

5. Restart. Windows will not prompt for product key.'
