| 15348 | 2001-07-10 23:46:00 | I run Compaq Presario laptop, about four months old, with PS2 keyboard, USB mouse and USB network connection. At least once a day it reboots spontaneously, like a power off reboot, then runs scandisk etc. It makes no difference if it's hooked to the network (ie no USB network connection in place), if it's running business software or games. It also makes no difference as to whether or not i'm touching it! as it has rebooted when left alone by itself. I now have power saving features turned off, and autosave switched on, and I run a pretty well standard machine with no unusual software. Spoke to Compaq who got me to upgrade the bios, and this minimised the reboots for a time (used to be 3x a day), but now appears to be coming back more often. The vendor has tested it, and swapped USB network connectors etc, but we're still no closer to the solution (although the bios upgrade helped). As I use the laptop to write businessplans (www.businessplans.co.nz for free advice and downloads), I need to avoid the unrelaibility and rework. Help! it's frustrating! I'll offer $100 worth of business consulting time via email (10 emails) if someone can provide a solution - excluding selling it, losing it, not using it, swapping it, damaging it or anything ridiculous! Thanks in advance Jamie Smith |

| 15350 | 2001-07-11 03:56:00 | This is interesting. I also own a Compaq laptop (Armada E500), and some time back it went through a period of annoying reboots. As spontaneously as it appeared it also disappeared, and hasn't returned since. At the time I had installed Norton System-Works and thought it may have been some conflict between with this and Windows. In light of your posting however I feel that it could well be a problem associated with either the preinstalled software or architecture of Compaq laptops. As you have said that the problem had been lessened for a time by upgrading the bios, this should provide a clue to the technical people at Compaq. The technical support contact ph numbers which I have are: (09)379-4646 and 0800-266727. Personally I would persevere with them until the problem is sorted. As your machine is only 4 months old is it under warrenty (bought new). If so is sending it to Compaq or the vendor and receiving a replacement in the interim an option. As a business person you have definite needs. Tell them you have resorted to posting on the PC World forum, and hopefully this will get them to respond faster & take you seriously (bad publicity etc). Sorry I couldn't solve your problem but I wish you all the best. | Guest (0) | ||
| 15351 | 2001-07-13 12:22:00 | hi Jamie, I suggest you eliminate windows from the picture by running a DOS based diagnostics program to soak test it. If it reboots then it's likely to be heat or a faulty power supply. If it stays up then move onto windows device drivers and IRQ sharing problems. I know this isn't constructive, but must be said: compaq make great desktops and servers, and incredibly crap laptops. |
