15218 2001-07-08 22:09:00 My PC will not boot. I turn it on, there is brief acticity... and then nothing. Power-on light stays on, hard drive continues to rotate... but nothing! Screen receives no input from computer.

Before this terminal state was reached, the machine was loicking up intermittently.

I have removed each card (modem, sound card, etc); have unplugged printer; have removed one bank of RAM, then the other; have removed CMOS battery and replaced it after 24 hours. Nothing helps.

Help! Please...

15220 2001-07-09 03:35:00 do you have a video card on onboard video?
You may have a faulty video card. A faulty video card will cause a PC to lock up and/or cause errors during applications such as dots accross the screen while locking up

I tried a new battery today; no change.

I would appreciate any other thoughts you may have.

Thank you for your reply to my posting.

I have removed the 3D card I added six months ago, but computer will still not start. I was interested in your comment about dots across the screen; I did see some of these before the 'death'.

Any more ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

15223 2001-07-10 00:04:00 A note about taking out the cmos battery. Modern PC's use EPROM which never looses it's info no matter how long the battery is out.
Near the cmos or the CPU is a jumper with 3 pins. move it from the two pins it's on and move it over to clear the cmos. This takes 3 seconds ans is much safer.

15224 2001-07-10 01:43:00 Just a thought on this one, you have added a 3D card and you also have onboard video? and if you reset the bios I think the settings would go back to the onboard video, are there 2 video connectors at the back of the pc? if so try both. Guest (0)
