15214 2001-07-08 20:19:00 How do I know if my modem is not faulty, should I give it an AT command? When I set it to plug and play it detects and installs. But when going to use it it says can't detect make sure switched on or installed correctly. In system it says device is working properly?? I have also tried setting jumpers to com 1 and com 2 but no good same response, if I was to install on com 2 should I disable it(serial port 2) in BIOS or should I select an IRQ & I/O address?? I looked in computer properties to see what is free but nearly all IRQ's are in use; some by unknown device??

Any ideas
cheers

15215 2001-07-09 03:29:00 I have an isa 56k modem. If you set it to com2 as I have, you will need to turn off com2 in the bios (installing as com2 also gives you a free irq the plug and play would have used)
If you use it as plug and play you will have to change the port address to 330 and try different irq numbers, some modems will only dial on irq5 and irq10

15216 2001-07-09 21:08:00 A quick way to test a non-win modem is to send an AT command from the DOS prompt. If your modem is set to COM2 as suggested above, issue this command from the DOS prompt:

echo atdt1234567 >com2 <enter>

where 1234567 is a phone number, say your ISP's. Then listen to hear if your modem dials out.

Cheers

15217 2001-07-09 22:44:00 Firstly, set modem to non PNP on com4, then go through the usual modem setup in control panel with add new hardware wizard etc.
One thing to make sure of is when you are starting your PC, between the memory count/hard drive detection and windoz startup there is a screen that tells you a lot of info about your PC including com ports installed, if it doesn't show 2e8 in the installed com ports then there is a serious problem, dead modem, otherwise it could be a programming problem in the modem eeprom.
