1276697 2012-05-22 05:44:00 I have Windows XP SP3. I've installed these updates KB2572073, KB2633880, KB2518864 but they aren't showing in Add/Remove programs when I check 'show updates' but are showing on the MS website in 'review update history' as being installed (four times). Each time I shut the computer off it tells me it is installing the updates but when I reboot the yellow shield is there again wanting to install the updates. I've not had this problem before. Anyone else having a problem? bellbird (6169)
1276698 2012-05-22 07:19:00 All those updates are for .net framework, one possible reason is your .net Framework is corrupted in some way and the updates wont stay put, so to speak. You can try uninstalling .net Framework and reinstalling it, that sometimes works.

If you have ATI graphic Drivers Take note of the poll owing advise from another site:

Note that if you have Catalyst installed along with ATI video drivers, Catalyst requires that .Net Framework 2.0 is installed. You may get error messages from Catalyst after it has been un-installed.

1276699 2012-05-22 10:04:00 The .net 2 framework can be a sod to uninstall. There is a removal tool here: blogs.msdn.com

Alternatively, to be rid of the nuisance of repeated notifications of updates which don't install, select Custom instead of Express when trying to install, and then untick the boxes. There is then an option to not have the updates shown again :)

1276700 2012-05-22 10:55:00 Thanks wainuitech and Terry. I looked at MS for uninstall/reinstall info and also your link Terry but I fear getting into difficulties so I've taken the easy option for now but I have a question. In selecting the option to not have the updates shown again include all MS updates or just those three which wouldn't install. Also I was wondering whether an uninstall of .net Framework 2 with CCleaner would have been an option. bellbird (6169)
1276701 2012-05-22 11:02:00 Same prob here (www.techsupportforum.com). And here (answers.microsoft.com). And here (answers.microsoft.com). And here (www.computing.net) Speedy Gonzales (78)
1276702 2012-05-22 11:20:00 Thanks Speedy, I'll get into this problem further tomorrow. bellbird (6169)
1276703 2012-05-22 21:17:00 I also had that problem when I fired up my XP backup computer yesterday. Since I don't use it much and have a backup cloned hard drive anyway I took the bull by the horns and wiped all the .net using that removal tool after Add/Remove failed to do the job. Also in Add/Remove the various .net said rarely used , so what the heck :)

After using the removal tool the updates still kept coming, so that was when I chose to hide them. Incidently Bellbird, the hide option applies only to those updates that have been unticked.

1276704 2012-05-22 23:36:00 A bit more searching indicates this is a "world wide" problem....social.technet.microsoft.com

Maybe best just to hide the updates for now. It is most likely bugs in the update. It doesn't seem likely that everyone has corrupted .net 2 framework.

1276705 2012-05-23 05:09:00 Thanks Terry, pleased it's not just my computer. Hope I don't have to go through the uninstall/install process. bellbird (6169)
1276706 2012-05-23 09:53:00 Had the same problem with those updates yesterday, but today all is fine. b.... (7683)
