1253808 2012-01-13 02:45:00 Actually, Stuff have stuffed up and are only reporting half the story to make it look worse than it really is (thats not saying their stance is right).

In order to get more males into their main tent, which is dominated by females with cooking and produce stalls, they introduced home brewing for males to encourage males to enter the tent and bring some balance to that part of the show. I have heard that she could enter her beer, but it would not be judged.

That still doesnt mean its ok, but dont be like Stuff and make a bigger issue out of it than it really is,

And who cares what anyone at the Nelson A&P show or Nelson Mail has to say, all shows are run different, its not Nelson area their comments are irrelevant.

And lastly if she (rachel) doesnt like it, then dont enter, if she wants a spot in the main tent, bake a freakin cake and comply with their rules. Its their show, and its your choice if you want to attend or compete.

1253809 2012-01-13 03:03:00 So the cooking and produce stalls are dominated by women, but are men excluded from entering a cake or doily or whatever?

I would have thought the inclusion of beer brewing would be enough to encourage the presence of more males, regardless of the sex of any one of the brewers.

So a "Whites Only" sign on the gate would be OK too then?

1253810 2012-01-13 03:28:00 So a "Whites Only" sign on the gate would be OK too then? What a stupid comment, why bring race into it?

As I said, what there idea was/is, doesnt mean its ok. I wouldnt know if men are excluded from entering a cake etc, probably not, however a Southern Man is not likely to enter a cake making event and more likely to enter a beer brewing event.

1253811 2012-01-13 03:35:00 How would that be different from what has happened here?
"Their show, their rules" only applies up to a point.
When you have rules that contravene basic rights, such as arbitrarily discriminating on the basis of sex (or race etc.) then "It's not OK".

Good luck with it.

1253814 2012-01-13 09:36:00 What does it matter whether a man or women brews the beer as long as it tastes good. Bobh (5192)
1253815 2012-01-13 09:56:00 FYI -- did you guys ( or gals) ;) miss this part of the article:
The Nelson show allowed women to enter the home-brew category, just as men entered the baking, with one winning the jam-making last year, Harvey said So a guy won the jam contest last year.
