borrowing one. considering joining the 4G generation. welcome your
thoughts?
Meh, 4G isn't going to be here soon. And the prices here will mean there is no point in 4G...
Depends on how much you want to spend really.

4/ want to keep up my french by downloading new caledonian news
bulletins onto USB key and listening to them as i drive to university
- would like to investigate car stereos with USB inputs

This is all about how much you want to spend. You can get a decent unit for about 150-200. Buy Alpine or Pioneer.
Don't waste money on cheap junk.
http://www.jonvy.co.nz/ I would recommend. I have done 2 cars with them, plenty of my mates have, too. It is in Auckland, and she could have it done here.
But I guess you could find other traders on TM who have similar (or better prices) in Wellington.

She will regret having a car in Auckland, the traffic is a bummer. And the prices for parking aren't great either.

5/ headphone and micrphone set for skyping (one i used here was
borrowed from work)"

I would recommend this: www.computerlounge.co.nz

Why does she want a printer? She will be able to use the printers at Uni... Seems redundant and a waste of money...

1/ notebook needs "servicing" - general advice, query
upgrade/replacement. virus definition stuff
2/ phone: recently broke my last nokia in the rain. currently

3/ printing: for study purposes may need a basic printer

Any advice?

Pray that she doesn't come to you next year and say..."Dad, I have decided to get married and have been looking at wedding reception places. How do you feel about this?"

(experience talking here!!! Daughter tied the knot last year in Sydney. I know how that fellow feels, in the advert on TV where he is thinking how he could have had a new VW car for the cost of his daughters wedding!!

1253548 2012-01-12 02:10:00 ah, I'm learning things. Like the difference between 4G and smartphone

The Jonvy link looks good in particular a Pioneer unit at $129. But I'm confused by the specs. It says MP3/WMA which implies a USB input except that there's none mentioned. They only mention AUX. I presume that is 3.5mm

Unless it has CD? Surely not

1253549 2012-01-12 02:39:00 20 years! (choke)

What will you do if your Cruise Control suddenly fails? your ABS computer throws a wobbly?

Oldest car was 38.
Whats Cruise Control? Whats ABS?

Why do I care? More crap to fix.
It goes well, if it gets some major problem eventually - like the motor, you drive it down to the wreckers and then go buy another cheap car.

It was cheap cause it has paint rot, but mechanicals are good. Waste of money spending more unless you are rich enough to buy something special.

Parking will be the main issue around UNI, there was a 3 yr waiting list for staff car parking, never mind students....all the carpark buildings are full and on the side of the road parking is pointless cause they have around 1 hr limits.

1253550 2012-01-12 17:53:00 I'm in the same boat as pctek.

My car is over 20 years old.
I bought it used.
It's needed very little work, with the only big job being to cut some rust out and replace the windscreen that was broken during the job.

When I bought it I was looking for a car WITHOUT electric windows, power steering and aircon, for the same reason - it's just more stuff to break down.

The only feature I decided I needed was to add central locking to all doors.

While I wouldn't be surprised if it had to be replaced within 2 years, I also wouldn't be surprised if I was still driving it in 10 years time (car over 30 years old by then).

It's also an ex-rental for those who hold the theory that rentals are abused. It did 100,000K as a rental.

Reckon even if I won Lotto I still wouldn't blow a wad of money on buying a new car.

I tried too. Getting harder to find now. I got stuck with the electric windows.

One window was munted, $999 from Toyota for a new part - $125 from wreckers for the part and the entire rest of the it too...inc window motor.
